FTC 121 Syllabus
Course Description: This course provides content on exercise physiology and nutrition as it relates to public safety personnel and the tactical population. Topics include components of a tactical strength and conditioning program such as aerobic endurance, muscular fitness, body composition, and mobility. Other topics include exercise programming, mental health, and injury and disease prevention and treatment.

Course Learning Objectives:
This course is intended to:
- Prepare students physically for a career in the fire service.
- Empower students to establish lifelong healthy habits for readiness, performance, and longevity in the fire service, as well as health and fitness across the lifespan.
Student Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Define the physical fitness components and their significance with regard to performance and injury prevention, and identify specific exercises and training techniques that improve each fitness component
- Establish personal physical health, mental health, and fitness objectives; and declare personalized SMART goals to improve performance and reduce risk of injury and chronic disease on the fireground and across the lifespan.
- Design and implement an individualized exercise program that demonstrates principles of exercise physiology and develops each energy system and fitness component specific to the demands of firefighting
- Interpret an individual nutrition analysis, then design a nutritional program that enhances the health and physical performance of the firefighter
Meet Your Instructor: Jennifer Meloni, M.S, FMS
Jennifer has her Bachelor of Science in Physiological Science from UCLA (1994) and her Master of Science in Kinesiology from CSU Fullerton (1999). She has taught university and college-level courses in Personal Health, Anatomy and Physiology, Movement Anatomy, Technical Writing, Wellness for Tactical Populations, and Physical Fitness for Public Safety Personnel. Her academic certifications include Canvas Silver Badge Training and Online Teaching Certification. Her professional certifications include CSCS, FMS, and CPR/AED. Her favorite activities include running, hiking, soccer, baking and cooking with her kids, and anything outdoors!
