Course Syllabus
Chemistry 249 Syllabus
Course Description:
This course is the first semester of a year long organic chemistry course. It will consist of a study of carbon compounds and their reactions. This will include an emphasis on reaction mechanism and the structure/reactivity relationship. The laboratory will consist of a survey of standard organic techniques for synthesis and the use of spectroscopic methods for identification.
The course will consist of 3 hours of lecture and 6 hours of lab each week. Laboratory attendance is mandatory and students are required to attend on campus during the scheduled times.
Textbook Information:
- Organic Chemistry, Klein, 3rd edition
- Student Solution Manual for Organic Chemistry, Klein, 3rd edition
- Introduction to Organic Lab Techniques, Microscale, 5th edition
- Student Laboratory Research Notebook, Phanco
Student Learning Objectives:
As with any course, a key student-learning outcome is the mastery of the course content. With this course content mastery, students will also develop the following skills:
- Students will demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of course content during periodic exams and quizzes throughout the semester.
- Students will be able to provide a written and/or oral explanation of chemical concepts using the appropriate scientific language and writing style with sufficient supporting evidence during exam, presentation and lab reports.
- Students will be able to generate, record, analyze and discuss experimental data while completing lab notebooks and reports.
