Course Description:

This course is the first semester of a year long organic chemistry course.  It will consist of a study of carbon compounds and their reactions.  This will include an emphasis on reaction mechanism and the structure/reactivity relationship.  The laboratory will consist of a survey of standard organic techniques for synthesis and the use of spectroscopic methods for identification.

The course will consist of 3 hours of lecture and 6 hours of lab each week.  Laboratory attendance is mandatory and students are required to attend on campus during the scheduled times.

Textbook Information:

  • Organic Chemistry, Klein, 3rd edition
  • Student Solution Manual for Organic Chemistry, Klein, 3rd edition
  • Introduction to Organic Lab Techniques, Microscale, 5th edition
  • Student Laboratory Research Notebook, Phanco

Student Learning Objectives:

As with any course, a key student-learning outcome is the mastery of the course content.  With this course content mastery, students will also develop the following skills:

  1.  Students will demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of course content during periodic exams and quizzes throughout the semester.
  2. Students will be able to provide a written and/or oral explanation of chemical concepts using the appropriate scientific language and writing style with sufficient supporting evidence during exam, presentation and lab reports.
  3. Students will be able to generate, record, analyze and discuss experimental data while completing lab notebooks and reports.
