SAC LogoBeginning Sewing Syllabus

Course Description:  Construction techniques for beginners with emphasis on learning how to use the sewing machine and reading a pattern. Students will construct a skirt, shirt, lined garment, and a compilation of construction techniques. Students will learn basic sewing techniques, how to select fabrics, and how to conduct fittings.

Textbook Information:  Optional Textbook. Course focuses on free online videos and tutorials.



Student Learning Objectives:  By the end of the semester, students will sew samples of various seam finishes, edge finishes, excess fabric construction techniques, and closure applications.

Meet Your Instructor: 

Kyla Benson is the Department Chair of the Fashion Program at Santa Ana College. She has recently revamped SAC's fashion program with her industry connections from her tenure as a designer in L.A.'s and Orange County's apparel industry. Kyla has designed for large companies including Hurley, O'Neill, and Fox Racing. She has also started small businesses where her work has been seen in magazines including InStyle and US Weekly and worn by celebrities such as Drew Barrymore and Alicia Keys' baby son.
