Lifelong Understanding and Self-Development

Course Description: 

This course integrates concepts of lifelong understanding pertaining to career choice, educational planning, and self-inventory. Skills, values, and interest assessments are utilized. Emphasis is on applying psychological principles to values clarification, goal setting, and decision making. Students analyze social/cultural conditioning and explore successful strategies for living in a diverse society.

Student Learning Objectives: 

  • Identify the student service resources at Santa Ana College
  • Identify the personal values and beliefs that will affect and influence their life and career decisions
  • Identify a college major that interests them

 

Meet Your Instructor:

Courtney Beirne has worked for Santa Ana College as an Adjunct Counselor since 2016. She has taught counseling courses at the college and through the dual enrollment program with SAUSD. Additionally, she has counseled in general counseling and UniversityLink counseling through the Transfer Center. Before joining Santa Ana College, she worked for 7 years as an advisor at the State University of New York, Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center. Courtney received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Cultural Anthropology from UC Santa Barbara in 2002. She then earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work with an emphasis in health, mental health, and disabilities at Columbia University, New York in 2008. Courtney is excited to be a part of the Santa Ana College community!
