MA 098 Phlebotomy Syllabus
Course Description:
This phlebotomy course is designed for health care workers and provides a comprehensive introduction to the practice of phlebotomy, with focus on safety principles, equipment and point-of-care testing.

Welcome to this hybrid phlebotomy course! Students will complete the learning activities and competencies with 70% accuracy or higher and spend two laboratory days with Professor Emley on 10/14/2017 and 10/21/2017 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in Russell Hall. After two successful venipunctures and two capillary punctures, students with be awarded a certificate of achievement.
Students must agree to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on each other and sign a release of liability in order to participate in this course.

Course Learning Objectives:
- The student will demonstrate the preparation, mechanics and implementation of safe venipuncture and capillary puncture for purposes of gathering blood specimens.
2. The student will apply knowledge of lab collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precautions necessary and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood.
3. The student will implement standard precautions and identify methods of requisitioning, specimen transport and specimen processing.
4. The student will focus on professional attributes for the phlebotomist, effective communication strategies, patient identification, Health Information Portability and Accountability Act considerations and safety in the work setting.
Student Learning Objectives: the student will:
- Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of phlebotomy online curriculum as demonstrated by 70% or higher accuracy rates on assessments and learning activities.
- Apply principles of safe phlebotomy as demonstrated by two successful venipunctures and two capillary punctures.
- Implement standard precautions during laboratory sessions per Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
