SAC LogoMath 150 Syllabus

Course Description:

Single and multi-variable calculus including limits, derivatives, integrals, exponentials, and logarithmic functions and partial derivatives Applications are drawn from biology, social science, and business. Students are expected to use their college algebra skills (Math 140).

Textbook Information:

  • Calculus and its Applications: by Marvin L. Bittenger & David J. Ellenbogen; 11th ed.

You can either use the hard covered textbook or the e-version of the text. The e-version is included in the MyMathLab software.  These items are available in the campus bookstore or online in our MyMathLab classroom.

Course Learning Objectives:
The primary purpose of Math 150 is to provide students with topics in calculus which are necessary for success in transfer level business courses and classes in other fields requiring a knowledge of business applications.

Student Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Find the derivatives of polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions;
  2. Find derivatives of functions involving sums, differences, products, quotients and the chain rule;
  3. Use derivatives as a tool to graph functions, using first and second derivatives to determine extrema, points of inflection, intervals of increasing and decreasing, and concavity;
  4. Use calculus to analyze cost, profit and revenue functions;
  5. Use calculus to find maxima and minima in optimization problems;
  6. Use derivatives to find rates of change, tangent lines, and solve related rate problems;
  7. Find definite and indefinite integrals by using general integral formulas, integration by substitution and
  8. Use integration in business and economic applications.

Course Schedule:   Download a copy of the course schedule. You will want to refer to this often to ensure that you don't fall behind on assignments. Math 150-41068 Schedule

Success Strategies: Download a copy of the success strategies guideline. Follow the procedure outlined to help you succeed in the course. Success Strategies

Completing Chapter Reviews: Download a copy of this document and review it before you complete chapter reviews in MyMathLab. Completing Chapter Reviews

Sample Lecture Problems: Download a copy of a sample lecture assignment. This sample is from section 1.6. Notice how the problems are numbered in order from 1-7. You will need to enter the problems in order on your lecture notes submittals as well. These must be neat and organized so I can easily find each problem on your submittal. You should always begin each section lecture on a new page. The lecture notes will be submitted through the Lecture Notes Submittal option. Section 1.6 Lecture
