MA055 Medical Assistant Clinical Back Office

Course Description: 

Medical back office training including medical asepsis, hand washing, sterilization procedures, autoclaving, sterile gloving and ungloving, assisting physician with patient exams and minor office surgical procedures, setup and maintenance of sterile field, taking vital signs, wound care, dressing, bandaging, specimen collections, the administration of medications and injection techniques.  Professional ethics, legal aspects, patient education and human relations are also covered.

Eight Red Parscore Scantron Sheets (Electronic Grading Test Answer Sheets) may be purchase at the El Don Book Store. 

Students are encouraged to obtain a free at no cost Santa Ana College Student Identification Badge that can be worn on the lapel during class sessions. ID Badges are available in the Student Business Office in the Village VL-205B.

Student will:

  1. Focus on attributes of professionalism and define scope of practice for the back office medical assistant.
  2. Instruct the medical assistant student in the mechanics of safe back office procedures.
  3. Prepare the medical assistant student for entry into health care career.

  1. Perform clinical back office skills according to Occupational Safety Health Administration guidelines.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in all clinical back office skills.
  3. Meet criteria for entry-level medical assistant employment in the clinical back office setting.

 Meet Your Instructor: 

Professor Emley began teaching at Santa Ana College in the spring of 1998 as a Nursing Faculty in the third semester of the program teaching Mental Health Nursing and Medical Surgical Nursing. With the retirement of Dr. Rockoff in 2009, Professor Emley migrated from the nursing department and transitioned into the Medical Assistant department in the fall of 2009. It has been her distinct pleasure to grow and nurture the Medical Assisting Program and engage students in career and vocational education at Santa Ana College.

Professor Emley was born in Santa Ana, CA and moved to Canada, Riverside, Norco, Brentwood, Van Nuys, West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Mid-Wilshire District, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Orange, Santa Ana, Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo. 

Professor Emley went to Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Good Council, St. Mel's, Notre Dame High School, Mount Saint Mary's and University of California, Los Angeles.
