Medical Assistant 001 – Cooperative Work Experience Educational / Occupational

Course Description: 

MA001 includes supervised paid or volunteer experience in student's major including new or expanded responsibilities. Units are earned based on the number of hours worked per semester: 60 hours of nonpaid work hours= 1 unit; 75 hours of paid work hours= 1 unit. Four (4) units are the maximum per semester. Course may be repeated. Grade: Pass / No Pass only.

Textbook Information: 

Students may choose their own resources for the work environment and use their textbooks from the medical assisting program.


Additional Course Information: Medical Assistant Externs will:

  • Attend and participate in Orientation, Skills Review and Wrap Up Meetings.
  • Arrange work schedule with site supervisors - goal = 200 hours.
  • Frequently collaborate with Professor Emley via text, e-mail or phone calls regarding progress, challenges and problem-solving at the work site.
  • Provide Application Agreement that is signed and endorsed by site supervisor.
  • Develop, sign and evaluate three Performance Objectives with site supervisor.
  • Maintain, sign and submit CWE Time Sheet verified with site supervisor signature.
  • Arrange a visit with Professor Emley at the work site (weeks 13-15).
  • Submit a MA001 Exit Survey during Week 16 Wrap Up Meeting.
  • Regularly communicate in forums on Discussion Board.
  • Obtain a Santa Ana College Identification Name Badge (VL-205B).
  • Purchase scrubs for Clinical Back Office settings.
  • Wear a wrist watch with a second hand to accurately count pulse rates.
  • Bring their own stethoscope to the work site as directed.

  • Apply medical assisting skills and knowledge in the work environment with patients and staff
  • Function successfully as an entry-level medical assistant in the front office &/or back office ambulatory care environment
  • Implement professionalism and consistently practice within the scope of a competent medical assistant

  • Demonstrate professionalism and understanding of administrative and/or clinical responsibilities in the ambulatory care setting.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills in the medical environment with patients and co-workers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Collaborate with facility personnel in terms of problem-solving and conflict resolution with patients and staff.

Meet Your Instructor: 

Professor Emley began teaching at Santa Ana College in the spring of 1998 as a Nursing Faculty in the third semester of the program teaching Mental Health Nursing and Medical Surgical Nursing. With the retirement of Dr. Rockoff in 2009, Professor Emley migrated from the nursing department and transitioned into the Medical Assistant department in the fall of 2009. It has been her distinct pleasure to grow and nurture the Medical Assisting Program and engage students in career and vocational education at Santa Ana College.

Professor Emley was born in Santa Ana, CA and moved to Canada, Riverside, Norco, Brentwood, Van Nuys, West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Mid-Wilshire District, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Orange, Santa Ana, Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo. 

Professor Emley went to Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Good Council, St. Mel's, Notre Dame High School, Mount Saint Mary's and University of California, Los Angeles.
