Chemistry 209 Syllabus
Course Description: Chemistry 209, an introductory chemistry, is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles of general chemistry. It's purpose is to prepare students for enrollment in first year general chemistry (Chem 219/229). The course is divided into five units which will cover atomic theory/structure, bonding, matter, solutions, periodic law, and other concepts. The course will consist of 3 hours of lecture and 3 hours of lab each week. The course is a hybrid course. The lecture will be done in an online format. For the lab, students will be required to attend on campus during the scheduled time. Lab attendance is mandatory!

Course Learning Objectives: As always, the primary goal in any chemistry course is for students to master course content. In this course, students will become competent in the basics of chemistry in preparation for enrollment in General Chemistry.
Student Learning Objectives:
- Students will demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of course content during periodic exams and quizzes throughout the semester.
- Students will be able to provide clear and concise written and/or oral explanations of chemical concepts using appropriate scientific language and writing style style during exams, oral presentations or in online forums.
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of laboratory safety, be able to show familiarity with basic lab equipment, and employ proper laboratory technique during the successful completion of laboratory experiments.
Meet Your Instructor:
Professor Pratt: I have my B.S. in Biochemistry from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and my M.S. in Biochemistry from California State University, Long Beach. I have been teaching at Santa Ana College for about six years. I have been certified to teach online at Santa Ana College as well as in the use of Canvas.
