This course can be accessed at http://rsccd.instructure.com You may access our course site from home, the library or the student labs at SAC. When you are officially enrolled in the class and the class has been made available to students, you will have access to this class on our college Canvas site. Students are expected to monitor the Canvas site and complete all assignments in a timely manner. Students are expected to login at least every two days.

Course Description: 

Introduction to Digital Media Arts is a foundations course providing students with experience in digital multimedia exploration.

It is a gateway course to Graphic Arts and 3D Animation programs here at SAC. Digital and time-based media will be applied to design concepts with emphasis on developing students’ conceptual basis for making art. Introduction to Digital Media Arts is for artists, photographers, web designers, programmers, and animation artists. The course includes an overview of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, digital graphics terminology, careers, market applications, and design components.

Subscription to Lynda.com * (Optional, but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. All extra credit will be given through Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning Activities)

  • Access to Lynda.com can be granted for free with a library card from two local libraries. The LA County Library or the Newport Beach Library.

Lynda.com is an online video tutorial site, it will give you access to tutorials 24/7 and will supplement any materials taught through faculty lectures/demonstrations offered in this course. Lynda.com offers a 'search bar' to search for tool names, keywords or even concepts as you begin exploring digital media foundations.

*For those of you who are curious enough to explore advanced tools or software, this site will give you access to such topics to satiate your curiosity. 

Access to Adobe Creative Cloud Software REQUIRED.

  • Adobe does offer a brief free trial for each software program.
  • An Adobe Software subscription for students can be purchased HERE.
  • Santa Ana College has an Academic Computing Center with the required Adobe software programs available to all students for FREE, the lab is located in the Chavez building, Rm 106.
  • Information regarding the Academic Computing Center, including hours and contact, can be found here: http://www.sac.edu/AcademicProgs/Business/ACC/Pages/default.aspx

Regular internet access.

  • This is absolutely necessary to receive announcements, emails, and complete graded activities via Canvas. Much correspondence will be done digitally. Please verify your email address is accurate via WebAdvisor as you cannot change your email address in Canvas.
  • If you do not have reliable internet access at home, an alternative would be to schedule hours here on campus to work in the Academic Computing Center.

Additional Course Information:

This course is the 'gateway' course for entry into advanced level coursework in the programs of Graphic Design, Digital Media Arts and 3D Animation/Modeling

ART 195** serves as the prerequisite for the following courses:

  • ART 121A: Fundamentals of Typography
  • ART 122: Graphic Design I
  • ART 168: Portfolio & Business Development
  • ART 192: Digital Design with Photoshop
  • ART 162: Digital Illustration with Illustrator
  • ART 164: Digital Publishing with InDesign
  • ART 198: Graphic Design for the Web

* ART 195 has NO PREREQUISITES! You do not need to have computer skills or previous computer coursework to enroll in this course. It is a BEGINNING level course for students interested in the fields of Digital Media Arts.

**ART 195 is articulated with the following High Schools: Valley HS, Rancho Alamitos HS, Godenez HS, Pacifica HS, Saddle Back HS, Villa Park, El Modena HS, Orange HS, and Santa Ana HS. If you took The Art of Graphic Design at these schools, and earned a C or higher you qualify to earn credit for ART 195. Please review the following documents to receive credit for this course and enroll in the advanced course offerings listed above.

Course Learning Objectives:

  1. Introduce students to industry-standard design software and tools.
  2. Explore design methods for design of montages, vectors, web pages and page layouts.

Student Learning Outcomes: 

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Create and design new montages comprised of multiple image origins using basic tools of industry-standard software.
  2. Create and design unique vector graphics using basic tools of industry-standard software.
  3. Insert content for page and web design using basic layout tools of industry-standard software.
  4. Recognize and apply image info and file type requirements for application across multiple media. 
  5. Navigate industry-standard software by identifying design tools, menus and app windows within software workspace.
  6. Identify key figures in the fields of digital media arts and graphic design.

Grades:

Grading Policy: Grades for each assignment will be based on how well the work meets the assignment objectives as discussed in the assignment description and grading rubric. Evaluation will include the demonstration of skills as demonstrated through course resources, craftsmanship, following directions, and conceptual vision. For full credit, work must be turned in on time. If you are unavailable on an assignment due date, it is your responsibility to deliver your work to me prior to the due date, otherwise it will be counted as a LATE assignment. Rubrics can will be made available for every assignment.

All assignments will become unavailable one week after the scheduled due date, and will not be reopened.

Assignment Submissions: Assignments will only be accepted via Canvas submission. Absolutely no assignments may be submitted via email. No exceptions to this will be made. If an assignment is not submitted to Canvas by the closing of the course, the assignment will not be graded and will receive a '0'.

Grades will be based on a percentage of points earned over the semester:

A = 90-100% Excellent

B = 80-89% Good

C = 70-79% Average

D = 60-69% Below Average

F = 0-59% Failed
