Course Description: 

This class examines the developing child in a societal context focusing on the interrelationship of family, school and community and emphasizes historical and socio-cultural factors. Socialization processes and identity development that support and empower families by showing the importance of respectful, reciprocal relationships will be explored.

Textbook Information: 

Child, Family, School, and Community, Berns, R., (2016, 10th Edition) – 8th, Edition, 9th Edition, online and international versions of text are acceptable

Technical Requirements

  1. Abide by the Santa Ana College Core Competencies and Student Learning Outcome #3B - Information Competency: Students will use technology learning tools and technology applications at a level appropriate to achieve discipline specific course requirements and standards. Demonstrated skills might include, but are not limited to: word processing and file management; use or development of simulations, web pages, databases; graphing calculators; etc;
  2. Have frequent and dependable internet access with a high speed modem;
  3. Utilize a computer that has anti-virus software installed;
  4. Utilize Microsoft Office 2010 or newer (word, powerpoint, excel, publisher);
  5. Type and electronically submit all assignments through Canvas; and
  6. Establish several accounts for free web-based tools, including, but not limited to Animoto, Intel Teach, and Google.

Course Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze theories of socialization that address the interrelationship of child, family and community.
  • Critique strategies that support and empower families through respectful, reciprocal relationships to involve all families in their children’s development and learning.
  • Critically assess how educational, political, and socioeconomic factors directly impact the lives of children and families.
  • Critically assess community support services and agencies that are available to community and families.
  • Synthesize and analyze research regarding social issues, changes and transitions that affect children, families, schools and communities.
  • Analyze one’s own personal and professional values and goals, as related to family history, life experiences, and school success in working with children and families.
  • Synthesize interpersonal skills in relation to professional growth and effectiveness.
