This course can be accessed at http://rsccd.instructure.com You may access our course site from home, the library or the student labs at SAC. When you are officially enrolled in the class and the class has been made available to students, you will have access to this class on our college Canvas site. Students are expected to monitor the Canvas site and complete all assignments in a timely manner. Students are expected to login at least every two days.
Course Description:
Fundamentals of Typography will include an introduction to the use of type styles, appropriate type selection and their characteristics as a means toward understanding design and communication through type solutions. Projects will explore current graphics industry practices and standards, including the use of digital technology and traditional hand skills. Art 122, 162, 191A, 192A recommended.

- Access to Lynda.com can be granted for free with a library card from two local libraries. The LA County Library or the Newport Beach Library.

Lynda.com is an online video tutorial site, it will give you access to tutorials 24/7 and will supplement any materials taught through faculty lectures/demonstrations offered in this course. Lynda.com offers a 'search bar' to search for tool names, keywords or even concepts as you begin exploring digital media foundations.
*For those of you who are curious enough to explore advanced tools or software, this site will give you access to such topics to satiate your curiosity.
Access to Adobe Creative Cloud Software REQUIRED.
- Adobe does offer a brief free trial for each software program.
- An Adobe Software subscription for students can be purchased HERE.
- Santa Ana College has an Academic Computing Center with the required Adobe software programs available to all students for FREE, the lab is located in the Chavez building, Rm 106.

Regular internet access.
- This is absolutely necessary to receive announcements, emails, and complete graded activities via Canvas. Much correspondence will be done digitally. Please verify your email address is accurate via WebAdvisor as you cannot change your email address in Canvas.

If you do not have reliable internet access at home, an alternative would be to schedule hours here on campus to work in the Academic Computing Center.

Course Learning Objectives:
- Introduce students to industry-standard design software and type-based tools.
- Explore design methods for design of vector-based type design, page layout and creative solutions to type-based messaging.
Student Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Students will be able to identify type styles, characteristics, and categories by creating an illustrated booklet of these concepts. (Take Home Test)
- Students will comprehend type themes for layout variance, by creating a multi-piece type-based book cover design exploring each theme. (Portfolio)
- Students will demonstrate comprehension of type system design concepts by designing cohesive original typefaces using a system, and apply said designs to a commercial poster. (Portfolio)
Grades:
Grading Policy: Grades for each assignment will be based on how well the work meets the assignment objectives as discussed in the assignment description and grading rubric. Evaluation will include the demonstration of skills as demonstrated through course resources, craftsmanship, following directions, and conceptual vision. For full credit, work must be turned in on time. If you are unavailable on an assignment due date, it is your responsibility to deliver your work to me prior to the due date, otherwise it will be counted as a LATE assignment. Rubrics can will be made available for every assignment.
All assignments will become unavailable one week after the scheduled due date, and will not be reopened.
Assignment Submissions: Assignments will only be accepted via Canvas submission. Absolutely no assignments may be submitted via email. No exceptions to this will be made. If an assignment is not submitted to Canvas by the closing of the course, the assignment will not be graded and will receive a '0'.
Grades will be based on a percentage of points earned over the semester:
A = 90-100% Excellent
B = 80-89% Good
C = 70-79% Average
D = 60-69% Below Average
F = 0-59% Failed
