SAC LogoCOUNSELING 107– The Freshman Experience

 

Course Description: 

This course is designed to help you successfully transition into higher education. The goal is to help you acquire the necessary skills that are crucial for academic success while pursing your educational goals. This course will expand your knowledge of study techniques and decision-making skills and help you develop strategies to increase your academic success. 

Textbook Information: 

Focus on Community College Success, by Constance Stanley, 4th edition (New $70.75, Used $53.05, Rental $43.08)

**Important Note:  Financial Aid Can Help You Get Books NOW If you are receiving federal financial aid (the Pell Grant) and have already accepted your financial aid on WebAdvisor, you may use your financial aid to purchase your books through the SAC Don Bookstore before you actually receive your disbursement. IF YOU ACT DURING THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE SEMESTER, by going to the Don Bookstore in VL -208, be prepared with a valid identification card and student number. After the second week, you can no longer use this option because your check is being processed. If you have additional questions go to the Financial Aid Office in VL-105.


Student Learning Objectives: After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate effective study skills techniques related to their learning styles, such as note-taking and test-taking
  • Plan effective use of time and resources
  • Learn decision-making skills and goal setting techniques to set a path toward reaching their educational goals
  • Increase self-motivation and awareness
  • Identify student resources at SAC
  • Learn how to become a responsible group member within a collaborative learning environment

 

Meet Your Instructor:

Courtney Beirne has worked for Santa Ana College as an Adjunct Counselor since 2016. She has taught counseling courses at the college and through the dual enrollment program with SAUSD. Additionally, she has counseled in general counseling and UniversityLink counseling through the Transfer Center. Before joining Santa Ana College, she worked for 7 years as an advisor at the State University of New York, Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center. Courtney received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Cultural Anthropology from UC Santa Barbara in 2002. She then earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work with an emphasis in health, mental health, and disabilities at Columbia University, New York in 2008. Courtney is excited to be a part of the Santa Ana College community!
