Medical Assistant 020:
Bloodborne & Airborne Pathogens
Course Description:
This eight-hour lecture presents the California Occupational Safety and Health Act: Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogen Standard for occupational at-risk exposure to hepatitis, human immunodeficiency virus / acquired immune deficiency syndrome and tuberculosis including compliance requirements, exposure control measures, exposure determination, protective equipment, and post exposure practices.

Course Requirements:
- Eight-hour class (two, four sessions) with mandatory attendance
- (National Safety Council requirement)
- Written Pretest and Post-test (5 + 5 points)
- Pathogen Analysis – Discussion Board Post – 25 points
- OSHA Overview – Discussion Board Post – 25 points
- Return demonstration of proper use personal protective equipment – 10 points
- Final Exam – 30 Points
Course Learning Objectives:
- Discuss Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) compliance standards and regulations.
- Identify bloodborne and airborne pathogens and discern modes of transmission.
- Evaluate OSHA exposure determination and engineering and work practice controls.
- Articulate universal precautions and demonstrate personal protective equipment.
- Outline post exposure evaluation and follow-up.

- Relate knowledge of bloodborne and airborne pathogens to health career practices.
- Distinguish how to manage occupational hazards related to exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
- Demonstrate methods of personal protective equipment.
Meet Your Instructor:
Professor Emley began teaching at Santa Ana College in the spring of 1998 as a Nursing Faculty in the third semester of the program teaching Mental Health Nursing and Medical Surgical Nursing. With the retirement of Dr. Rockoff in 2009, Professor Emley migrated from the nursing department and transitioned into the Medical Assistant department in the fall of 2009. It has been her distinct pleasure to grow and nurture the Medical Assisting Program and engage students in career and vocational education at Santa Ana College.
Professor Emley was born in Santa Ana, CA and moved to Canada, Riverside, Norco, Brentwood, Van Nuys, West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Mid-Wilshire District, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Orange, Santa Ana, Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo.
Professor Emley went to Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Good Council, St. Mel's, Notre Dame High School, Mount Saint Mary's and University of California, Los Angeles.
