Course Description:
This lecture class provides information on exercise physiology and nutrition as it relates to public safety personnel. Topics include the components of a tactical strength and conditioning program such as metabolic conditioning, muscular fitness, body composition, and mobility. Other topics include exercise programming, mental health, injury and disease prevention and treatment, and diet and nutrition for health and performance.

Student Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define the physical fitness components and their significance with regard to performance and injury prevention and identify specific exercises that improve each fitness component.
- Apply principles of exercise physiology to an individualized exercise program.
- Design and implement an exercise program that develops energy systems specific to the demands of firefighting.
- Recognize the importance of physical fitness, activity, mental health, and nutrition in the fire service and how these improve performance and reduce risk of injury and chronic disease, including coronary artery disease.
- Analyze and implement a nutritional program that enhances both health and physical performance.
