Meet Your Instructor:  Kathy Kieu-Diem Nguyen, MBA

Biography

Kathy Kieu-Diem Nguyen is a Business Development Consultant since 2010. Before that she was working in nonprofit sectors for over 18 years and she continues to volunteer to several nonprofit organizations. She received her B.A in Psychology from Cal State University Long Beach and her M.B.A from University of Phoenix. She has extensive experience in business development, non-profit management, and business operations management. She has been providing training and professional development workshops to employees, managements and C-level executives. She believes that employee engagement and employee development will help the company bottom-line. She is currently serving on the Board for the Vietnamese American Chamber of Commerce. She likes to share her knowledge and experience with others.

Course Description: 

Business math applications including review of fractions, decimals, percent, banking, discounts, markups, payroll, interest calculation, installment buying, mortgages, depreciation, taxes, insurance, stocks, bonds and mutual funds.

Business Math-Brief Edition.11th Ed.  Cheryl Cleaves, Margie Hobbs, Jeffrey Noble

 

Additional Course Information: 

  1. Attend each class with supplies including the
  2. A 1” 3 ring binder or folder, 3-hole college ruled paper, multiple black or blue pens for writing, multiple red pens for correcting, and
  3. Failure to bring these items to EVERY class may reduce your points to ½ of what you would normally get. So don’t forget them!
  4. Participate in each
  5. Complete reading assignments in textbook prior to
  6. Complete & present your project and other
  7. Have an active email account for group collaboration and a working email account that is assigned to WebAdvisor and Canvas (They may be the same.)
  8. Be familiar with Canvas.


Course Learning Objectives: 

The course objective is to obtain an understanding of business concepts and vocabulary in order to establish a foundation of business math. Students will be required to identify, describe, and demonstrate understanding of:

  • Whole numbers
  • Fractions
  • Decimals banking
  • Payroll
  • Mortgages
  • Financial statements and ratios
  • Taxes
  • Insurance
  • Annuities
  • Investments
  • Business statistics and data presentation

This text will prepare you to enter the business world with mathematical tools for a variety of career paths. The chapters on business topics build on your knowledge of mathematics, so it is important to begin the course with a review of the mathematics and problem-solving skills you will need in the chapters to come.
