REQUIRED MATERIALS
- Chemistry: An Atoms-Focused Approach, 2nd edition, Gilbert, et al.
- Chemistry 219 Lab Manual (Available to print from Canvas)
- Safety Goggles (instructor approved)
- A non-programmable scientific calculator. Students will not be allowed to share calculators during exams and the instructor does not supply them. During exams, only non- programmable calculators may be used. No cell phones allowed.
- Carbonless Lab Notebook
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to:
- Use chemical nomenclature
- Solve chemical problems conceptually and with dimensional analysis
- Identify the structure of atoms
- Determine the bonding & structure of molecules
- Identify & describe the states of matter
- Determine the concentrations of solutions
- Perform calculations regarding the kinetics of chemical reactions
- Perform basic chemical laboratory techniques and maintain a scientific notebook.
STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Students will demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of course content by exam periodically throughout the semester
- Students will be able to provide a written and/or oral explanation of chemical concepts using the appropriate scientific language and writing style with sufficient supporting evidence by exam, presentation and lab reports.
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of laboratory safety, be able to show familiarity with basic lab equipment, and employ proper laboratory technique during the successful completion of laboratory experiments.
