Course Description: 

Chemistry 209, an introductory course to chemistry, is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles of general chemistry.  It is designed to prepare students for enrollment in first-year general chemistry (Chemistry 219/229).  The course is divided into five units which will cover atomic theory and structure, chemical bonding, properties of matter and solutions, periodic law and other concepts.  The course will consist of 6 hours of lecture and 6 hours of lab each week during the  condensed 8 week summer session.  The primary source of communication in this course will be by email.  Please be sure to have a current working email address in your CANVAS profile.       

 

Textbook Information:  

Hein, "Foundations of College Chemistry", 15th edition

Students are required to purchase an access code in order to complete the online homework assignments.


Student Learning Objectives: 

As with any course, a key student-learning outcome is the mastery of the course content.  With this course content mastery, students will also develop the following skills:

  1.  Students will demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of course content during periodic exams and quizzes throughout the semester.
  2. Students will be able to provide clear and concise written and/or oral explanations of chemical concepts using appropriate scientific language and writing style during exams, oral presentations or in online forums.
  3. Students will demonstrate knowledge of laboratory safety, be able to show familiarity with basic lab equipment, and employ proper laboratory technique during the successful completion of laboratory experiments.
