Course Description: This course will cover the various healthcare systems that influence the practice of occupational therapy. Topics will include economics, types of insurance, healthcare policies, ongoing healthcare reform, and the role of technology. As a part of this course students will complete an independent in-depth study of one the key practice areas in OT as identified by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Course requirements: Students are responsible for all lecture content, assigned readings and assignments. Students are expected to complete all reading assignments as stated in the course schedule, participate in discussions via the discussion pages, complete all written assignments by the specified due dates, and take scheduled quizzes through Canvas.

Grading will be based on weekly discussion pages, 3 quizzes and a research assignment. All written work must be in the student’s own words and, if needed, include a reference in APA format. All written assignments, quizzes and discussion board activities are to be submitted electronically and due in to the instructor on the due date. Late work will not be accepted and the student will receive a “0”.
Grading Scale: A = 90–100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = below 60%
A 70% overall course average is required for passing.
It is the responsibility of the student to set up an appointment with the instructor if an examination grade is below passing (70%).

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES: With a minimum of 70% accuracy, students will be able to:
- Students will analyze the influence of economics, technology, demographics, research and current trends in health delivery formats and the role of OT.
- Students will evaluate the impact of policy and health care reform in terms of current practice and potential changes in the delivery of OT services.
- Students will research one of the key practice areas identified by AOTA and provide evidence for specific treatment interventions of the selected area based on current professional literature.
COURSE OBJECTIVE: Through reading, online lecture, discussions, and projects the student will be able to:
- Analyze the pros and cons of various health delivery models in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Evaluate the status of the US healthcare system in comparison to other industrialized countries.
- Analyze the impact of various types of insurance and economics on healthcare.
- Appraise the barriers of access to healthcare in the US.
- Evaluate quality of healthcare, safety for patients, and the impact of medical malpractice.
- Investigate the role of technology in healthcare.
- Evaluate various ways that technology can be used in OT treatment.
- Analyze situations where tele-rehabilitation can be used in OT.
- Examine government regulation on research and pharmaceuticals and its impact in these areas.
- Investigate healthcare policy and reform.
- Analyze the effect of healthcare reform on the practice of occupational therapy.
- Evaluate one of the key practice areas as identified by AOTA in terms of how it is integrated into current and future healthcare delivery systems, reimbursement for services, evidence to support it and the role of the OTA.
