I'm Eddie Ayala and I will be your public speaking instructor this semester. I have been teaching full time for three years and have an absolute passion for enhancing communication skills. I am looking forward to getting to know each one of you this semester.

 

Course Overview 

Welcome to CMST 102 Public Speaking! This course focuses on understanding and applying the fundamental principles of public speaking. Our goal is to learn how to present information clearly, reasonably and persuasively by delivering individual presentations.


I know most of you are feeling anxious about taking this course. However, I want you to relax knowing that it is my goal to create a comfortable, safe, environment for you. I do not expect perfection, I just want you to challenge yourself, and be open minded to what public speaking can do for you both personally and professionally. We will succeed! 

Student Learning Outcomes 

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver speeches from various forms of public oratory.
  • Identify and use key organizational patterns for selected methods of delivery.
  • Write formal outlines, an audience analysis, and bibliography appropriate for various forms of public oratory.
  • Construct logical arguments to support claim or proposition.
  • Work on researching skills.

Course Materials 

  • Recommended textbook (not required): Stephen Lucas. The Art of Public Speaking (11th edition). 
  • Recording device that allows you to listen and watch your speech.
  • Note cards (3x5 or 4x6)
