GRADING STANDARDS Your grade will be based on the following criteria:
Your grade will be based on the following criteria:
a. Participation and attendance (50points)
You can earn your participation grade by coming to the class prepared and ready to participate on a regular basis; and by consistently interacting in Chinese with your instructor and classmates. If you do not need to attend this class to pass the exams, you belong in a more advanced Chinese class. There are no “excused” absences. Missing a class will lose 10 points participation grade from this category. Without any reason report to the instructor, students who arrive late or leave during class in session will result with a mark of absence. Students will need to notify the instructor ahead of the class and submit homework within a week from the day of absence.
b. Homework (20x100=200 points)
Homework will be assigned each class session. It is student’s responsibility to hand in work on time. Any late work will be deducted points, and need to submit the homework within a week from the due day. The work submitted later than a week will not be accepted.
c. Online Quizzes (x10=167 points)
For each lesson, there will be an online quiz. The quiz is allowed to retake once. Students are not allowed to make-up any online quiz. Please pay attention to the quiz close and open dates on Canvas. A handy tip is to set a calendar item or alarm on your phone to remind yourself of the due dates.
d.Unit Tests (3 tests total 146 points)
There is a unit test every two lessons on paper.
e.Mid-term exam/Final Exam (200 points)
f. Final Project (100 points)
Interview a Chinese speaker or your classmates by asking at least 20 questions based on the conversation topics we have learned. Among 20 questions, 14 of them should be related to the lesson topics covered throughout the semester. You may send me the questions to review before it is submitted. The interview sheet will include your information, your interviewee’s brief information and your interviewing questions with answers. Record your interview by video, then you may upload the video along with the interview sheets with answers to the Canvas assignment folder by due date. If you can't find anyone to be your partner to complete this project, I am always available. Please make an appointment earlier so I can set aside my time.
Evaluation:
- 50 points: Interview questions and answers: originality and creativity
1) Use of proper Mandarin language and Chinese culture
2) Make good use of learned materials.
- 50 points: Presentation: Clarity of pronunciation, fluency, voice control, physical presentation, quality of the video
g. DLA (50 points): Directed Learning Activities (DLAs) provide supplemental instruction to an instructor's course. You are required to complete three DLAs at the Learning Center. When students check-in, they will receive a DLA packet. Those DLAs will provide specific instructions.
Extra Credit:
Culture Presentation (30 points) You will present a 5 minute project that explains one particular topic pertinent to Chinese culture. You are required to do some book or online research, as well as interviews to get your information correct, complete, and comprehensible. Your culture project should be illustrated with PowerPoint slides and may be presented in English.
Grading Scale: Letter
A – (100 – 90) percent; B – (89.99 – 80) percent; C – (79.99 – 70) percent; D – (69.99 – 60) percent; F - 59.99 percent and below
ACADEMIC HONESTY Cheating and other forms of dishonest behavior are destructive to the educational process for all students, and will not be tolerated in this class. As a result, the following guidelines shall be followed: 1. Students may not submit work that is not totally their own, and 2. Tests & exam must be taken individually with no assistance of any kind. Anyone caught copying from others, allowing others to copy his/her work or using information fraudulently obtained is subject to receiving a “0” on that assignment. Any student engaged in ANY dishonest behaviors may be reported to the Dean of Student Services.
CLASS POLICY
1) Electronics in the Classroom--Turn off your electronic devices! It is very disruptive if phones or hand-held devices go off in class, so please show respect to your classmates and instructor and turn them off before coming in to class. No computers, please!
2) Drop Policy--It’s YOUR responsibility! Instructor may drop you for excessive absences, but ultimately it is YOUR responsibility to drop the class. Do not assume that the instructor will drop you. It is your responsibility.
3) Class Conduct--Participate in class, and always respect others. Students are responsible for regulating their own conduct and for respecting the rights and privileges of others. Failure to show respect for the standards is cause for dismissal from class and even expulsion.
4) Show up on time! Please make a point of being ready to go when class starts so we do not lose any time.
