Course Description:  

The course in Medical Interpretation will provide instruction to students on how to render professional interpreting services in various medical settings. Students will learn the essential skills of interpretation, key medical terminology and the tools necessary for continued professional growth beyond the classroom. Students will understand the demands, ethics, and standards of the profession in order to display confidence and professionalism as a healthcare interpreter.

Course Learning Objectives: Assist the students in obtaining an understanding of the healthcare interpreting field in order to establish a foundation of business knowledge and professionalism. The course objectives include:

  1. Demonstrate culturally competent communication strategies with limited-English proficiency patients.
  2. Demonstrate a moderate knowledge of Spanish medical terminology.
  3. Perform and interpret basic consults for various medical specialties and healthcare settings.
  4. Understand the roles, ethics, and standards associated with healthcare interpreting.
  5. Improve existing Spanish skills in order to render a basic written translation.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

You MUST:

  1. have the textbook;
  2. create a Quizlet account; study the terminology and study guides;
  3. have & know how to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint & Excel &/or Adobe PDF creator;
  4. have an email address & access to high-speed internet. Computers are available in the lab & the library for your use; additionally, computers may be available in the classroom;
  5. participate in the class discussions;
  6. complete assignments, quizzes, research project and final exam on time;
  7. be familiar with and utilize CANVAS to obtain instruction and complete your work.
