COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Introductory instruction in basic weight lifting concepts and experiential practice in large muscle area development utilizing guided and free weights. Development will be in muscle size or tone and strength or endurance.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate competence in weight training techniques.
  • Describe the role of weight training for health promotion and discriminate between the benefits of weight training and various other fitness activities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Perform beginning weight training exercises with good form and thought given to safety.
  2. Express the health-related components fitness and the relationship to a weight training program.
  3. Improve total body muscle strength and endurance through weight training activities.
  4. Develop a balanced weight training program that will meet the goals and objectives of the student.
  5. Recognize fundamental principles and terminology of weight training.
  6. Label 10 –15 major muscle groups utilized in weight training.
  7. Record the activity done during weight training including the lifts, weights, sets, and reps.
  8. Act, interact, and react to others with appropriate weight training etiquette and safety behaviors.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS and INFORMATION: 

*  Develop a workout that meets your fitness objectives utilizing a minimum of 9 lifts/exercises. Your instructor can assist and make recommendations for the necessary lifts to accomplish your physical goals.

*   Be on time and participate in all class activities for the required 1 hour and 25 minutes.

*   You must be an active participant during class time.

*   The student MUST carry their WORKOUT CARD AND A LARGE TOWEL during the workout.

*   Wear appropriate workout gear (shorts, sweats, T-shirt, Tennis shoes) that is necessary to provide full range of movement and safety during exercise. Street clothes, denim shorts/pants or sandals will NOT be allowed.

*   SHOWERS & LOCKERS: Students must supply their own lock and towel.

*   Cell phones must be turned off while in class.

*   The instructor of this class reserves the right to direct a student take another class if this class is too difficult and their safety is in jeopardy because of their skill level.

*   The following physical fitness course (weight training) may involve strenuous exercise and may cause bodily injury. All participants should be in good physical condition. A medical examination is suggested prior to any strenuous physical activity. Participants should notify the instructor if special arrangements are necessary.

Grade Distribution

90 - 100% =A

80 – 89% =B

70 – 79% =C

60 – 69% =D

< 60%     = F

 

GRADINGThis is a graded class.  Participation is an important aspect of any exercise class.  Coursework will be weighted as follows:

    • 30 class meetings x 5 points=150 points
    • 3 Exercise Testing x 20 points=60 points
    • Assignments 4 x 15 points=60 points
    • Mid-term/Final=30 points=30 points

    Classroom rules /Gym Etiquette:

    1)         Don’t drop or slam weights.

    2)         Re-rack or put away all weights.

    3)         Spotters are required for bench press.

    4)         Never monopolize equipment- allow others to lift in between sets.

    5)         Use your towel on benches/equipment.

    6)         Always be courteous to the other students in class.

    7)         Learn the names of other students in class.

    8)         Record each workout (weight, sets, and reps) on your workout card.

    Attendance/Participation

    Attendance is mandated by the state.  A student may be administratively dropped from class upon accumulating more than 3 absences; so don’t miss. An absence is considered excused if it meets one of the College’s sanctioned reasons (personal illness, death of an immediate family member, or a College sponsored event).  If a conflict arises, simply send me an email (nutter_kim@sac.edu) prior to the start of class and you will find that I am understanding and willing to work with you.  In the event of an absence, it is your responsibility to obtain notes from classmates and complete missed assignments.   Noteworthy:

    1. It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer participating.
    2. It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer attending.
    1. It is the instructor’s discretion to withdraw a student after the add/drop deadline.
