Course Description: This is an all online class that is designed to provide you with a solid foundation of key math concepts that are used by business professionals. 

Business math applications that will be covered and reviewed during the class, include: a review of fractions, decimals, and percentages; and a review of key calculations and concepts in banking, discounts, markups, payroll, interest calculation, installment buying, mortgages, depreciation, taxes, insurance, stocks, bonds and mutual funds.

 

Textbook Information:  Business Math-Brief Edition. 11th Edition. Cheryl Cleaves, Margie Hobbs, Jeffrey Noble. ISBN: 0134496434.  

  • You must have access to the book in order to take this class.  
  • Consider purchasing the electronic edition as it is cheaper than the printed version.  The SAC bookstore offers the textbook in both formats.  The publisher, Pearson, also offers a electronic copy and a rental copy.  NOTE: I am only including these links for informational purposes, please do your research to ensure you're buying the correct book before purchasing.


Course Learning Objectives: 

This course is designed to enable students to obtain an understanding of business concepts, vocabulary, and calculations in order to establish a foundation of business math. Students will be required to identify, describe, and demonstrate understanding of the below items.

  • Whole numbers
  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Percentages
  • Banking
  • Payroll
  • Business statistics and data presentation
  • Simple interest and simple discount
  • Consumer credit
  • Mortgages
  • Compound interest, future value, and present value
  • Financial statements and ratios
  • Investments

.Student Learning Objectives:  

  1. Communication Skills—students will be able to incorporate business mathematics terminology/concepts into their skillset. These skills can be used by students in communications with others in the business place.
  2. Thinking and Reasoning—students will learn how to apply course content, including mathematical tools, in identifying functional areas of business and their interrelationships. This will enhance their understanding of various business career paths.  Further, students will be able to conduct a variety of calculations commonly used in the business settings.
  3. Careers—students will be able to identify business career path opportunities and the requirements to succeed in such paths.

Students are expected to demonstrate these skills through the course’s assignments.  Students will carry out a number of tasks at a level that is necessary to achieve personal, professional and educational success.

Additional Course Information:  This class is entirely online. You must be familiar with the use of Canvas, including uploading documents.  Given that this is a math class, a number of assignments will require you to "show your work" by uploading documents to Canvas.
