Semester Start and End Dates: 02/11/19 - 06/09/19
Course Description: Microscopic, macroscopic, and dynamic view of the human physiological processes. The lecture portion includes a thorough consideration of both “cell and systems” physiology. Laboratory work includes the use of techniques used in basic research, an introduction to the use of standard medical equipment, and the performance of medical laboratory tests. Non-invasive experiments are performed on students enrolled in the class. Course is recommended or required for students who are majoring in pre-health professions (for example: Kinesiology, Nutrition, Nursing, Medical Doctor, Veterinary Doctor, Radiology, Pharmacy, Optometry, Speech Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy) and students who just want to learn more about their body.
Required Lecture Materials: Scantrons 882-E, Text: Human Anatomy and Physiology by Marieb 10th edition
Required Lab Materials: Students are required to purchase PPE (personal protection equipment) and lab materials. • Lab coat/Lab apron/Long sleeve shirt • Safety goggles/Safety glasses • Nitrile gloves (no latex gloves) • Closed-toed shoes. REQUIRED MATERIALS POINTS= FOR LAB: Lab Protocols (found on Blackboard), Scantrons 882-E, pencil, eraser, pants, gloves (not latex), closed-toed shoes, goggles/safety glasses, dissection kit, hair-tie to pullback long hair, lab coat/lab apron/long-sleeve shirt.
PARTICIPATION: Students are required to attend and participate (i.e. attempting the activities and participating in group discussions). They will not be graded on “right and wrong” answers unless specifically announced. Proper interpersonal skills are also necessary for future professionals to learn. Therefore, if students are disrespectful or rude to their fellow classmates, instructors or staff, then they may lose a portion of their letter grade and may be reported to the proper campus personnel.
LECTURE EXAMS: Students MUST TAKE ALL exams and practicum; if not, then they will earn an F grade. Lecture Exams will be given at the beginning of lecture on the scheduled dates. Lecture exams will be composed of multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and/or matching. Short answer questions may also be given. Students are responsible for bringing their own #882-E scantron, #2 pencil, and eraser.
LECTURE HW: YOU ARE TO TAKE ALL OF YOUR ASSESSMENTS ON YOUR OWN; YOU MAY NOT WORK IN GROUPS. Lecture homework will primarily be given online and are due on their POSTED date. Lecture homework may be composed of multiple choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and possibly short answer questions. Lecture worksheets will be primarily given online and are due on their POSTED date. Lecture worksheets will be self-directed learning activities and will be tied to an online quiz to assess learning
Make Up Policy: If you miss an exam/practicum WITHOUT A VALID & DOCUMENTED EXCUSE, you will earn a zero on that exam/practicum. If you miss an exam/practicum WITH A VALID & DOCUMENTED EXCUSE, the points for that exam/practicum will move to the final exam/practicum. For example, if you miss one lecture midterm exam (50 points), your final exam will now be worth 100 points. The only exception to the no make-up rule is the final exam; if you have a valid and documented excuse for missing the final exam (death in the family, hospitalization, military duties, etc.), then a make-up will be possible. Official documentation will be required. Please see me ahead of time to prepare accommodations.
Academic Integrity Policy: Any student who violates the SAC Academic Honesty Policy at a minimum (limited sanctions) will receive a 0 for the assignment or assessment and an Academic Misconduct Incident Report may be filed. College-wide sanctions include any sanction that will affect a students standing with the college-at-larger. Refer to the Santa Ana College’s Academic Honesty Policy as detailed in the SAC Catalog for more information.
Grading Policy: CHECK YOUR GRADES FREQUENTLY If you don’t complete an assignment, it will be scored as a zero. If you feel an assignment needs to be re-graded, then inform your instructor as soon as possible. The ENTIRE assignments will be regraded. There is NO GUARANTEE that the grade will go up. This must be done within a WEEK of viewing the key for the assignment. Your instructor will not change any grades that were acquired prior to the final exam after final grades are turned in. This course is not curved. Official semester grades will be available one week after the final on WebAdvisor.
TENTATIVE GRADE SCALE:
Course Total (500pts)
A = 90% = 450-500
B = 80% = 400-449
C = 70% = 350-399
D = 60% = 300-349
F = 0 – 59.99% = 0 – 348
POINTS BREAKDOWN -
4 Lecture Exams – 60 points each = 240 points total
3 Lecture Quizzes - 20 points each = 60 points total
5 lab quizzes – 10 points each = 50 points total
10 pre/post labs – 5 points each = 50 points total
2 Lab Practical exams – 40 points each = 80 points total
Renal Lab Presentation – 20 points = 20 points total
= 500 pts Possible
