Meet Your Instructor: Picture of dance instructor, Cyrian Reed

 

Cyrian Reed is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance/Performance and holds a Master of Arts Degree in Education/ Adult Education and Training from the University of Phoenix.

Cyrian has worked with artist such as Beyonce, David Foster, Taylor Dayne, Gnarls Barkley, Ceelo, Mitchel Musso, Cheryl Lynn, Trinere, Linear, KC & The Sun Shine Band, Choo Choo Soul. She recently choreographed for the Emmy nominated “Hip-Hop-Harry” sitcom on Discovery Kids/ TLC television channels. She has also choreographed for Nike, Adidas, Sketchers, Stella Rosa Wine, Rose Bowl, and Haagen-dazs ice cream commercials.

She currently teaches at the University of California, Irvine; Cypress Community College, and Santa Ana College.

 

Course Description:

This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn the art form of Hip Hop Dance and become a part of the Hip Hop community. Students will not only be taught by dance instruction but will review related video presentations, other scholarly works that emphasize the history of hip hop culture and it’s positive impact on the progression of dance today. To help implement the different hip hop techniques that are taught throughout the duration of the semester, classes will consist of the breakdown of hip hop sequences. These techniques represent across the floor methods and the retention of several six to eight count routines. Routines will be highlighted in group performances by students at the end of the program.

Course Learning Objectives: 

Given a set of hip-hop dance steps, the student will execute the combination with the accurate timing, space usage, technique and will demonstrate knowledge of hip-hop dance terminology.

 

Student Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the strength, coordination and rhythmic ability to execute the technical skills as listed in the course outline.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to perform simple hip hop movement combinations.
  3. Evaluate movements in terms of space, time, force, and reproduce them accurately through the movement of their own body.
  4. Examine a brief history of hip hop dance.
  5. Describe the influences hip hop dance has had on the American culture and cultures abroad.
  6. Evaluate their personal response to a dance performance in terms of choreography, music, performance of dancers and theatrical elements such as costume scenery and lighting.
