INTRODUCTION TO GEOLOGY LAB (Friday)

Geology 101L, Spring 2019

Book:  none, lab handouts and the lecture text will be used.

 

Grading:        15 labs, 10 points each                         (150 points)

                        10  pre-lab assignments, 5 points each             (50   points)

                        Lab Midterm                                                    (100  points)

                        Lab Final                                                         (100 points)

                        Total                                                                  400  points

 

 

                        Final Grades will be assigned as follows          A: 100-88%, 

                                                                                                B: 87-78%,  

                                                                                                C:  77-65%, 

                                                                                                D:  64-50%, 

                                                                                                F: 49-0%.

 

Pre-labs:  The prelab assignment  will be due at the beginning of lab each week.  Late prelab assignments will not receive full credit.

 

Attendance: You are expected to attend all class sessions.   Missed labs generally can’t be made up.  If you know of a scheduling conflict in advance, then talk to me.  I am more flexible about working ahead .  If you are more than 15 minutes late for a lab you will lose points on that lab.

 

Cheating:  Cheating and academic misconduct will not be tolerated and the Academic Honesty Policy of the college will be followed.  The minimum penalty will be a 0 on the test or quiz involved.  More serious cases will result in an F for the course and referral to the Dean of Students for further action.    See page 31 of the Santa Ana College Catalog for a full description of the Student Code of Conduct.

 

 

Electronic Devices:  Devices such as phones, games or ipods must be put away and turned off at all times in class.   Any use of a phone or other electronic device during a quiz or test will be considered cheating..

 

 

Academic Accommodation:  A student with a disability who would like to request an academic accommodation is responsible for identifying his/herself to the instructor and to the Disabled Student Programs and Services office (DSPS).   The DSPS office is in U-103 and the phone number is (714) 564-6264 or TTY (714) 564-6284

 

 

The last day to drop this class with a grade of W is May 12 and the last day to drop and get a fee refund is February 24.

 

 

 

 

 

Learning Objectives:  After successfully completing this course a student will be able to:

 

            1 Demonstrate an understanding of the physical structure and morphology of the Earth and te operation of Earth systems due to plate tectonics

 

  1. Identify and classify Earth materials and demonstrate an understanding of their chemical makeup.

 

  1. Analyze and apply the scientific method to geologic problems which will result in reasonable and logical conclusions

 

            4, Assess and evaluate the impact of natural processes such as earthquakes and volcanoes the human environment.
