Textbook The Good Earth: Introduction to Earth Science by McConnell & Steer, 4th edition            Bring your textbook to each class meeting!

Grading:  Grades will be based on a point system.  There will be approximately 900  possible points.

                        3 Exams  (100 points each)                  =  300 points

                        Final Exam                                          =  100 points

                        Best 3 Quizzes                                        =   75 points

                        Lesson Design Project                         =  100 points

                        PreClass Assignments                         =   50 points  (5 random sets will be graded)

                        Class Assignments                               =   150 points  (approximately)

                        Total                                                      =  775 points

The number of homework and other assignments may vary so it is quite likely that the final point total will not be exactly 900  points.

Final grades will be determined by the percentage of points earned divided into to the maximum number of points possible, as follows:                      A =  100 to 85%,

                                                B =  84 to 75%,

                                                C =  74 to 60%,

                                                D =  59 to 50%

                                                F =  49 to  0%

Attendance: You are expected to attend all class sessions.  In-class assignments will not be made up for any reason.  Exams may be made up only if I am contacted and informed of your valid reason before the end of the day the exam is given.

Cheating:  Cheating and academic misconduct will not be tolerated and the Academic Honesty Policy of the college will be followed.  The minimum penalty will be a 0 on the test or quiz involved.  More serious cases will result in an F for the course and referral to the Dean of Students for further action.

Electronic Devices:  Devices such as phones, games or iPods must be put away and turned off at all times in class.   Any use of a phone or electronic device during a test will be considered cheating..

Learning Objectives: By the completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Analyze and apply the scientific method to earth science problems, which will result in reasonable and logical conclusions.
  • Assess and evaluate the impact of natural processes such as earthquakes and volcanism on the human environment.
  • Design a grade appropriate lesson with an Earth Science focus

Class Policies:  All written work is expected to be neat and thorough, with complete sentences, proper spelling, and correct grammar and punctuation. Unless otherwise indicated, please type all work using 12-point font, double line spacing, and 1-inch margins. Work that does not meet these requirements will be returned ungraded.

ANSWERS MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS – NOT COPIED FROM TEXT! You will receive a “0” if answers are not in your own words!

Late work will not be accepted for full credit. Assignments are due on the date specified regardless of whether or not you are in class.

A large portion of what you learn in this class will be from interactions within your group, or from discussions with the whole class. During discussions, please listen carefully to the ideas of others and try to understand what they are saying. Show respect for others’ ideas, even though you might disagree. Everyone is expected to participate in discussions, although not on every question. Your instructor may weigh your classroom participation and effort in the determination of final grades. Your instructor may choose to raise or lower your final grade by one percentage point based on your class participation and effort.

Academic Accommodation:  A student with a disability who would like to request an academic accommodation is responsible for identifying his/herself to the instructor and to the Disabled Student Programs and Services office (DSPS).   The DSPS office is in U-103 and the phone number is (714) 564-6264 or TTY (714) 564-6284
