Course Description: Technical services covers the processes of getting
materials from a vendor to the user. This course will give you skills to work in library technical services and understand why these processes matter. We will discuss evaluation and acquisitions models, but mostly focus on cataloging.

Textbook Information: There is no required textbook for this class. Be sure to complete all readings assigned in Canvas.


Student Learning Objectives:  

  • Apply knowledge of technical services processes to assess and improve workflows
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the acquisitions processes (materials ordering, receiving and maintaining procedures).
  • Describe major elements in descriptive cataloging for print and electronic resource materials.
  • Demonstrate knowledge on how to use an integrated library system.
  • Apply user experience principles to improve search experience for users
  • Employ classification standards to exercise authority control principles.
  • Understand the value of authority control and its basic principles. (More broadly represent classification)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic processing and preservation techniques.
