 Materials:

  • Textbook Required: Calculus: Early Transcendentals W/Web Assign Access Code Package 8 Th Ed, Stewart. Please bring this to each class session. (Recommended)

Course Description:
This course will be helpful for those students majoring in engineering and mathematics. These fields of study often require knowledge of mathematics, including Calculus of Transcendental Functions, Integration Techniques, Conics, Polar Coordinates, Indeterminate Forms, Improper Integrals, and Infinite Series.

Student Learning Outcomes:

The successful student will be able to

  1. Students will be able to correctly organize and communicate ideas and solution using basic definitions, properties, and theorems of second semester calculus.
  2. Students will be able to correctly utilize integrals and infinite series to demonstrate in writing, logical reasoning processes to solve problems related to volumes, lengths curves, and representing functions using polynomials.

 Classroom Policies:

Students are expected not to distract or disrupt their fellow classmates.  All mobile phones, pagers, or other noisemaking devices must be turned off before the beginning of class. Laptop computers are not permitted to be used during class. No food or beverages other than bottled water are allowed in classroom. If you need to leave the classroom during class for any reason, please do so quietly without disturbing your classmates. Students who consistently disrupt class will be asked to leave.

As long as you come to class please feel free to ask me about anything you did not understand in class or need help with.

Drop Policies:

  • Excessive tardiness and/or leaving class early may be counted as an absence. Students may be dropped for 3 or more absences from lecture.

Grading:

Your grade in Math 185 is based upon the combination of all assignments as follows

Homework

70pts

Quizzes

Participation & class work

70 pts

30 pts

Midterm Tests

300pts

Final Exam

Total

180pts

650 pts.

All grades will be based on the usual percentages:  A 90%, 80% ≤ B <90%,                      70% ≤ C < 80%, 60% ≤ D < 70%, or  F < 60%.

Homework:

Homework will be done as a hard copy and turned into class. It will be graded based on correctness and completeness of the assignment. All the assigned problems for each section must be completed. Students missing the deadline for homework assignments will not be allowed to complete the assignment. If necessary, you should go to the Tutoring Center for help on homework. Late homework will not be accepted.

Exams:

We will have 3 major exams as indicated on the schedule. You will have the entire class period to complete each exam. NO individual makeup exams will be given. Exams will be designed to test your understanding of the concepts being covered in the course. This means that the exams will not consist solely of problems that closely resemble homework problems. Instead, they may contain problems that combine two or more different concepts from different text sections or that test your understanding of a definition or theorem. Be prepared!

Final Exam:

The FINAL EXAM will be comprehensive and worth 180 points of your grade. A missed final exam will result in an `F’ in the course. NO makeup exams will be given for missing class or being late!

Quizzes:

There will be 7 quizzes, (4 quizzes to be completed in-class as indicated on the schedule below and 3 pop quizzes). Quiz problems will be similar to the textbook and/or homework problems. The quizzes will have time limits and must be completed once you begin the quiz. Partial credit may be given based on correct mathematical notation and solution to each problem.

No make-up quizzes will be given for missing class or being late!

Attendance:

It is extremely important to attend class. You need to notify me in writing (or by email) at least 3 class meetings in advance if you will be absent. Students who are absent excessively (more than 2 times) may be dropped by the instructor without notice. After 3 absences you may be dropped from the class. If you miss any classes or assignments during the first two weeks you may be dropped. Be On Time and Participate!

Academic Accommodation:

Students with disabilities who believe they may need accommodations are encouraged to contact the Disable Student Programs and services (DSPS). To make arrangements for academic accommodation, contact the Disabled Student office in U-103 or by phone at 714-564-6264, TTY 714-564-6284 for a referral to the appropriate DSPS department.

Academic dishonesty:

Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, the following: Cheating, Plagiarism, Collusion, and/or other dishonest conduct. Students are expected to abide by ethical standards in preparing and presenting material which demonstrates their level of knowledge and which is used to determine grades. Such standards are founded on basic concepts of integrity and honesty. Students share the responsibility for maintaining academic honesty and are expected to:

  1. Refrain from acts of academic dishonesty.
  2. Refuse to aid or abet any form of academic dishonesty.
  3. Notify instructors and/or appropriate administrators about observed incidents of academic dishonesty.

You may receive an “F” for the assignment and/or for the course in any case of academic dishonesty and reported to college officials. A grade of “F” assigned to a student for academic dishonesty is final and shall be placed on the transcript.  If the student withdraws from the course, a “W” will not replace an “F” assigned for academic dishonesty. Academic disciplinary actions taken by the instructor based on alleged cheating may be appealed as specified in the College’s Instructional Grievance Policy. You are advised to read the sections on Student Code of Conduct and Academic Honesty in the college schedule.

Student responsibilities:

  • Read ahead in the book each day and be familiar with the new concepts, definitions, vocabulary and material before they are covered in the lecture.
  • You should study concepts on a regular basis and keep up with the material as we cover it in class. If you need further help, you need to come see me for assistance or take advantage of the tutoring center ASAP.
  • Check your grade regularly and report any errors to the instructor immediately. Failure to report any grade errors in a timely manner will result in no change or action taken by the instructor.
  • If you are an ACE student, you are responsible for notifying the instructor and getting any necessary documents to the instructor in a timely manner so that special accommodations can be arranged for you.
  • It is your responsibility to drop the course in a timely manner if necessary. Do not count on the instructor to do this for you at any time during the semester.

This course requires your full attention during class time. It is your job to learn the material. Part of this job will require you to participate in class, seek the appropriate help as soon as you encounter difficulties, and ask relevant questions when you do not understand the material, and submit assignments on time. The number one cause of failing this class is not asking for help.
