Course Description:

This lecture class provides information on exercise physiology and nutrition as it relates to public safety personnel.  Topics include the components of a tactical strength and conditioning program such as metabolic conditioning, muscular fitness, body composition, and mobility.  Other topics include exercise programming, mental health, injury and disease prevention and treatment, and diet and nutrition for health and performance.

Student Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Define the five physical fitness components and their significance with regard to performance and injury prevention and identify specific exercises that improve each fitness component.
  • Describe the FITT (Progressive Overload) Principle and its purpose, and demonstrate its application in an individualized personal exercise program
  • Understand the physical demands of fire ground tasks and the physiological energy systems used in each task. Demonstrate and implement an exercise program that develops each energy system specific to the demands of firefighting.
  • Discuss the importance of physical fitness, activity, mental health, and nutrition in the fire service and how these improve performance and reduce risk of injury and coronary artery disease.
  • Interpret and implement a nutritional program that enhances both health and physical performance.
