OER Math 83 Lesson Packet (available in the SAC Bookstore or as a printable PDF online).

CALCULATORS

You must have a scientific calculator for this course. The TI-36X Pro is the preferred model. On quizzes and exams you must have your own calculator or you will not be able to use one. Phones are prohibited.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

In an online class it is important for students and their instructor to maintain regular and effective contact. This means visiting the online classroom often, communicating with the instructor and one’s peers through the discussion board, and completing/submitting assignments on time. Math 083 moves at a very fast pace; if you skip homework for a couple of days, it will be nearly impossible to catch up. If your participation is unsatisfactory, you may be dropped from the class.

Please be advised that

• A student WILL be dropped for No-Show if he/she does not submit Lesson 1.1 Prep and HW assignments in Canvas by 11:59 PM Monday June 18, 2018.

• A student may be dropped for excessive absences if (1) He/She misses four assignments within the first week; OR (2) He/She has five days’ worth of missed assignments at any point during the course.

Student responsibilities include:

Read all correspondences from me and, if applicable, reply in a timely manner.

• View Lesson videos; read and/or work through textbook examples

• Take notes that are legible and neatly organized

• You are expected to spend about 15-18 hours a week on the course. If you spend less than this requirement it is unlikely that you will be successful!

• Complete and submit assignments on time.

• Prepare for and take all exams at the assigned time/date/place.

• Stay on top of the schedule; don’t let yourself fall behind just because “It’s an online class.”

• (Just in case you did not see the first time) You are expected to spend about 15-18 hours a week on the course. If you spend less than this requirement it is unlikely that you will be successful!

• Drop the class via WebAdvisor if you no longer wish to continue.

Homework

LESSONS Your homework will consist of 3 types of assignment for each lesson: Prep, Homework, and Workbook. Please refer to the Math 083 Homework Structure Document for more details. For all assignments, please write your work in a notebook before typing your answers into the computer. Your work must be neat, organized, and legible. Be sure to label each assignment with the name of the assignment, number each question, and box your answers. Most importantly, you need to SHOW WORK that is relevant to the problem, and mathematically accurate. For the Workbook problems I will grade not only on your final answers, but also on your mathematical notation and presentation.   These pencil-paper assignments which must be converted to a single pdf file and uploaded via Canvas. You can use the free app Genius Scan to create pdf files of your HW.

DISCUSSIONS Math 083 is a course which incorporates a lot of active and collaborative learning in the classroom. Online classes are required to have regular and effective contact with the instructor and with one another. I will use Discussion Assignments to achieve both of these goals for this online Math 083 course. You will be asked to complete certain workbook pages, respond to mathematical prompts, and post your work on the Discussion Board for peer review. Discussions are due on Tuesdays at 11:59PM of the week they are assigned.

STUDY SKILLS assignments are interspersed throughout the course and are designed to assist you in developing the personal qualities and Study Skills necessary for success.

SKILL BUILDING

There will be prep assignments in Canvas/Lumen to review skills needed for the topics we are covering in upcoming lessons. There will be classwork assignments that review material and check for understanding. Furthermore, it is often not the mathematics that prevents success in a math course. Study Skills exercises are designed to assist you in developing the personal qualities and study skills necessary for success. These exercises will be part of the Lesson assignments.

ONLINE QUIZZES

There are 7 online quizzes through out the course, to be submitted via Canvas as according to the Course Calendar. They are available for exactly 48 hours so please be sure to log on to Canvas to compete your exam as scheduled. Online quizzes cover Prep and Homework assignments. Late submissions are not accepted, so please give yourself ample time to complete, and don’t wait until the last minute in case there are unexpected technical issues (such as poor internet connection, website freezing, etc.).   Once you start the quiz each will have a 45-minute time limit. Keep in mind that you do get multiple attempts per each problem – owever there is a 10% dection per problem.   So if a proble is worth 2 points and you need a second attempt, you will receive 1.8 points if it is correct.   Your two lowest quiz scores will be dropped from your grade.

IN-CLASS Exams

We will have four mandatory in-class exams:

Exam #1 is on Friday March 8th from 600-800PM in H-104.

Exam #2 is on Friday April 5th from 600-800PM in H-104.
