Child Growth and Development Syllabus

Course Description: 

This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of children’s development, birth through adolescence.  The class will cover general trends of development, as well as how children’s individual rate of development can be a focus.  Heredity and environmental influences will be discussed.

**Students are required to have an active notification setting for Announcements and Conversation Messages in Canvas. 

Additional Course Information (Technical Requirements): 

  1. Abide by the Santa Ana College Core Competencies and Student Learning Outcome #3B - Information Competency: students will use technology learning tools and technology applications at a level appropriate to achieve discipline specific course requirements and Demonstrated skills might include, but are not limited to: word processing and file management; use or development of simulations, web pages, databases; graphing calculators; etc;
  2. Have frequent and dependable internet access with a high speed modem;
  3. Utilize a computer that has anti-virus software installed;
  4. Utilize Microsoft Office 2010 or newer (word, powerpoint, excel, publisher);
  5. Type and electronically submit all assignments through Canvas
Student Learning Outcomes: 
  • Describe development of children from conception through adolescence in the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive domains.  
  • Identify cultural, economic, political, and historical contexts that impact children's development.
  • Apply knowledge of development and major theoretical frameworks to child observations. 
Course Objectives:  The student will be able to 
  • Discuss major theories of child development.
  • Summarize developmental stages and milestones.
  • Differentiate characteristics of typical and atypical development.
  • Evaluate the influence of multiple contexts on children's development.
  • Apply objective techniques and skills when observing, interviewing, describing, and evaluating behavior in children. ​
