                  Course Objective:  The objective of World Music is to build interest, understanding, and appreciation of the various cultures of music.  Of course, this includes ALL music that's been written so far, but you did not sign up for this class to hear Motets by Palestrina.  This objective will involve a study of cultures and their ideas of music and its social organization.  In addition, students will build further comprehension concerning the importance and significance of music, by conducting field research on a culture of his/her choosing.  To this end, with weekly discussions of sociological, political, economical, and ethnomusicological trends of selected cultures, students will be well-informed and thus educationally equipped with the knowledge needed for getting to the core regarding the epistemology of humankind.

 

Grading:                                     Mid-Term 30%, Final 30%, Musical Ethnography 20%

                                                      Concert Reviews 20%

 

Student Learning Outcome for MUS 102:

 

Distinguish different purposes of music within a culture so that appropriate listening criteria are applied.

 

Attendance Policy:

  1. Attendance is Mandatory (Every 4 absences will result in a grade being lowered one step (e.g., A to B, B to C, etc.)
  2. Please be on time to class.
  3. Please prepare assigned reading prior to class meetings for intellectual discourse.
  4. Remember - Music is interactive. Your contribution will enhance the success of this course, and your grade.
  5. Being late/leaving early will count as half of an absence.

 

Ethnograph: 

                  All students must present a Musical Ethnograph.  Requirements are as follows:

                  A proposal will be submitted to the class on 2/18/19 indicating an interested subject and topic for field research.  Refer to Chapter 10 of Worlds of Music for any additional questions you may have.

 

Concert Attendance Report: 

                  You are required to complete two (2) Concert Attendance Reports.  YOU MUST ATTEND TWO LIVE PROFESSIONAL CONCERTS OF WORLD MUSIC, and type a two-page, double-spaced concert review for each. 

                  The purpose of this assignment is for you to attend and experience live performance of non-Western music.  You MUST ATTEND the concerts in person and in their entireties.  No electronic or other media transmitted performances count towards completion of this assignment.  The live concerts you attend MUST take place during the Spring 2019 Semester.  Please staple the program and your ticket stub to the review.  I am NOT concerned with perfect spelling and grammar (but PLEASE spell check your review and make it as coherent as possible).  I want to read about your reaction to the performance.  You may talk about the dress, venue, artist, instrumentation or anything you think was relevant to the performance.  Please do NOT quote anything from the program notes, I can read those myself.  Use STANDARD formats, (Turabian, MLA, Chicago) use double spacing and a 12 point Times New Roman font. 

                  If you are unaware of the status of a particular concert for which you are interested in attending, please check with the instructor prior to attending.  Invalid concerts will NOT be acceptable for a World Music Concert report no matter how honest the oversight may have been.  Concert reports are due ONE WEEK after the date of the performance!  Please e-mail me at: marr_john@sac.edu if you have any questions.

The FIRST concert report is DUE 4/3/19.

The SECOND concert report is DUE 5/22/19.

CONCERT REPORTS ARE DUE ONE WEEK AFTER THE DATE OF THE PERFORMANCE!

Litany of Rules and Regulations

  • NO late work will be accepted.
  • There will be no make up quizzes or exams.
  • Any concert report not stapled together will be automatically lowered ONE letter grade.
  • Any report with Texting (i.e. u, i, etc.) used in any academic work will be automatically lowered ONE letter grade.
  • Students who do not take the final will NOT pass the class.
  • It is the student's responsibility to drop him/herself from the class if s/he ceases attending.
  • Academic dishonesty will NOT be tolerated.
  • If you are a student with a history or pattern of irresponsibility, missing classes and then expecting extra help outside of class, missing classes because of whiny or flaky excuses; this is not the instructor from whom you should be taking a class.
  • Please turn off or down all cellular telephones and other noise making devices.
  • NO TEXT MESSAGING IN CLASS!
  • NO ELECTRONICS IN CLASS!
  • Students who text message during class will be removed from class WITHOUT prior warning.
  • You may NOT look at any personal electronic device during an exam.
  • Students who are caught using electronics in class will earn an F on their next homework assignment.
  • Students who continually break this rule will be removed from class!
  • YOU are responsible for any material presented in class whether you are in attendance or not.
  • The class will be run in a manner befitting of an institute of higher education. Students who do not/cannot understand this concept should not take this class.

Absence/Drop Policy: It is the students responsibility to withdraw officially from a course.  However, because of enrollment demand, a student may be dropped by the instructor for not appearing at the first class meeting.  A student may also be dropped for excessive absences when the total hours of absence exceed 10% of the total scheduled hours of the class.  Under extenuating circumstances, a student may be reinstated by the instructor.

Accommodations for Disabilities: Students with verifiable disabilities who want to request academic accommodations are responsible for notifying their instructor and Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) as early as possible in the semester.                   All students must present a Musical Ethnograph with a five-page paper. 

                  Your paper should discuss the history behind your ethnography. 

                  A proposal will be submitted to the class on 2/18/19 indicating an interested subject and topic for field research.

                  You should cite at least ten sources.

Litany of Rules and Regulations

  • NO late work will be accepted.
  • There will be no make up quizzes or exams.
  • Any concert report not stapled together will be automatically lowered ONE letter grade.
  • Any report with Texting (i.e. u, i, etc.) used in any academic work will be automatically lowered ONE letter grade.
  • Students who do not take the final will NOT pass the class.
  • It is the student's responsibility to drop him/herself from the class if s/he ceases attending.
  • Academic dishonesty will NOT be tolerated.
  • If you are a student with a history or pattern of irresponsibility, missing classes and then expecting extra help outside of class, missing classes because of whiny or flaky excuses; this is not the instructor from whom you should be taking a class.
  • Please turn off or down all cellular telephones and other noise making devices.
  • NO TEXT MESSAGING IN CLASS!
  • NO ELECTRONICS IN CLASS!
  • Students who text message during class will be removed from class WITHOUT prior warning.
  • You may NOT look at any personal electronic device during an exam.
  • Students who are caught using electronics in class will earn an F on their next homework assignment.
  • Students who continually break this rule will be removed from class!
  • YOU are responsible for any material presented in class whether you are in attendance or not.
  • The class will be run in a manner befitting of an institute of higher education. Students who do not/cannot understand this concept should not take this class.

Absence/Drop Policy: It is the students responsibility to withdraw officially from a course.  However, because of enrollment demand, a student may be dropped by the instructor for not appearing at the first class meeting.  A student may also be dropped for excessive absences when the total hours of absence exceed 10% of the total scheduled hours of the class.  Under extenuating circumstances, a student may be reinstated by the instructor.
