Course Description:

This is an introduction to digital photography, a foundation course to produce digital images and use digital-imaging technologies. Students will learn technical aspects of digital photography including pre-production planning, using a 35mm DSLR camera, an introduction to studio lighting, post-production software, printing, and presentation. While working on photography assignments, students are expected to master technical skills, develop work conceptually, and will be encouraged to pursue their own interests. The course will approach image making with a critical eye, to understand construction and manipulation of the photographic form and how this relates to meaning. Students will create photographs with an emphasis on contextualizing images through conceptual, ideological, and cultural aspects of the medium of photography. Assignments will be introduced through lectures on seminal artists in the field of photography to introduce a variety of aesthetic approaches and give examples for developing ideas. Students are expected to generate critical dialogue around concepts and processes through producing work and engaging in class discussion.
