Course Description: [Philosophy studies the nature of reality, values, knowledge, ethics and the social and political. This course addresses some of the most introductory, yet fundamental, questions of philosophy: What is knowledge? What is truth? What is the good life? Over the semester we will explore the ways some of the most influential thinkers have attempted to answer these questions and others. The course has no prerequisites; students are not assumed to have any prior familiarity with philosophy.]
Student Learning Objectives:
Students who are successful in this course will be able to demonstrate:
- An understanding of the discipline of philosophy, including its wide-ranging history, diverse standpoints, major problems, major fields and central topics.
- The ability to critically analyze and evaluate the central philosophical concepts, claims and arguments presented over the course of the semester.
- The ability to think and write in a reflective, clear, logical, and fair manner.
- The beginnings of their own well reasoned views on human nature and living the good life.
