Meet Your Instructor: [Hugh William Blake]
Course Description: [This course is a general introduction to the discipline of logic. Studying logic increases our ability to identify what makes arguments good or bad, and this helps us to know when to accept or reject arguments made by others and how to construct good arguments of our own. Topics covered in this course include basic concepts of logical argumentation, basic types of logical arguments, criteria for evaluating logical arguments, symbolic translation of logical arguments, common logical fallacies, truth tables in propositional logic, rules of deduction in propositional logic, and methods of argument proofs in propositional logic.]
Student Learning Objectives:
Students who are successful in this course will be able to:
- Identify, reconstruct, and analyze logical arguments, including conclusions, premises, and implicit assumptions, within reading passages.
- Identify, explain, and provide corrections for common logical errors.
- Recognize the underlying logical structure of written sentences and arguments, and, more broadly, to understand the relationship between logic and language.
- Think and work in a methodical, systematic, and precise manner in order to solve complex logical problems.
