COURSE OVERVIEW
Intersession 2019
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course covers the use of automotive diagnostic equipment such as scan tools and hand held lab. This course assists the student in preparation for e Performance) and L1 (Advanced Engine Performance) ASE certification exams.
CLASS HOURS: This class meets Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:00pm until 10:35pm. Class is divided into lecture and lab assignments. Class hours include two hours of lab assignments/exercises and two hours of lecture. Lecture is two hours combined. Subject introduction at the beginning of class and lab assignment findings debrief at the end of class. Students are expected to arrive on time and stay till class is over and shop clean up is finished.

Notebook with 5 dividers, pens, pencils, highlighter, etc.
Recommend: Laptop, iPad, Kindel, etc to gain access to Canvas
Students are expected to bring their textbooks, paper and pencil to each class meeting.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
The class is divided into lecture, demonstration and lab activity phases. Lecture/demonstration time covers the theory of unit operation. The lab phase allows for the application of theory to practical engine performance related problems.
Attendance:
Because of the fast pace of this class and the amount of material presented; students who miss 3 classes will be dropped. Three late arrivals will be counted as 1 absent.

The student’s final grade is based upon the point system. Total points possible are approximately 720 pts.

3 Shop Work (lab) 170 points 79-70% C
4 Mid-term exam 100 points 69-60% D
5 Final exam 100 Points 59% & below F
Attendance and Attitude will affect border-line students.
ACADEMIC DISHONSETY POLICY
From 2017/2018/2019 SAC Catalog: Students at Santa Ana College are expected to be honest and forthright in their academic endeavors. ACADEMIC ACCOMMODATION STATEMENT
A student with a disability, who would like to request an academic accommodation, is responsible for identifying herself/himself to the instructor and to the Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS). AUTOMOTIVE DEPARTMENT POLICIES
TOOLS: Students are required to furnish their own basic hand tools.
CLOTHING: Students are required to wear proper shop attire while in class and lab. Approved attire include Auto/Diesel department shirt with black or dark blue pants. Black or dark pants and black or dark blue shirt is an option. Leather work shoes. Canvas shoes (Tennis) are not recommended. No open shoes are allowed in the lab.
No Safety Glasses-No Work.
Failure to follow safety policy may result in the student’s removal from class
SMOKING: Santa Ana College is a NO smoking campus; No smoking anywhere on Campus. This includes vaping devices.
Driving in the Auto/Diesel Compound. Speed limited in the auto/diesel compound is 5mph. No reckless driving or speeding. All drivers are to use caution at all times. Radios are to be turned off while vehicle is driven in the compound area. Unsafe drivers will be banned from driving in the auto/diesel/welding compound area and will be reported to Santa Ana College campus security for possible further discipline.
PARKING: All vehicles parked in the automotive compound must display a valid work order and parking permit on the dash. Work order is issued through the tool room. To receive a parking permit order your permit online through webadvisor or through campus security. Vehicles brought in ahead of lab hours or left overnight must be parked outside compound in the designated yellow parking zone with a valid auto shop parking permit displayed on the dash. No long-term vehicle storage is available.
No student vehicles in the automotive compound without instructor’s permission.
Class Policies
Safety Glasses are Mandatory and must be worn while in the lab at all times. Students will sign safety glasses policy and follow safety glass policy at all times. Students not following glass policy will be subject to loss of lab assignment and/or dismissal for the day.
Electronic Media Policy – Lab assignments include the use of electronic media devices. Electronic media includes but not limited to school computers, school laptops, school iPads, scan-tools, etc. Additionally, students may be authorized by the instructor to use electronic media devices during class period example Personal cell phone, laptop and/or scan-tool. All electronic media devices are to be used for class assignments only during class period. Students caught using electronic media devices for personal business will be subject to loss of lab assignment time and/or dismissal for the day.

This course assists the student in preparation for the A8 (Engine Performance) and L1 (Advanced Engine Performance) ASE certification exams.

Describe the use of trouble codes in the diagnostic process.
Compare the various levels of scan tools in regard to cost and functionality.
