Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- To demonstrate the ability to compose written and oral examples of appropriate and effective communication strategies/messages in a variety of relational contexts.
- To demonstrate flexibility and adaptability when communicating with others.
- Students will identify and demonstrate perception checking, active listening techniques, conflict resolution, appropriate self-disclosure, and assertion techniques.
Learning Objectives
- Students will comprehend and apply the communication process model, including ability to recognize common communication barriers and the needs communication meets in life.
2. Students will comprehend how the way we perceive the world affects our ability to communicate and analyze the concept of Roles and the influence of culture and gender to shape one's frame of reference.
3. Student will recognize the barriers to effective listening and apply strategies to overcome barriers to effective listening and be skilled in active and empathetic listening behaviors.
4. Students will comprehend the nature and function of non verbal communication and its relationship to the communication process.
5. Student will understand the symbolic nature of language and its influence on communication acts and apply the distinction between facts/observation and inference/interpretation.
6. Students will understand one's self concept and its impact on the communication process.
7. Students will comprehend and apply the role of self-disclosure in developing and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Students will analyze the motivations for disclosure, risks and benefits, and guidelines for appropriate disclosure.
8. Students will comprehend positive/negative climates and their influence upon relationships.
9. Students will analyze the advantages/disadvantages of common approaches to conflict resolution.
Students will analyze the difference between Assertive, Aggressive, and non-Assertive communication styles and apply methods of assertive communication for managing defensiveness and conflict.
