Course Syllabus:HISTORY 120 INTERSESSION 1/7/2019-1/31/2019

Course Description:This course is a survey of United States history from pre-colonial through the Civil War. It focuses on the major political, economical, intellectual and societal forces at home and abroad that shaped American life during these time periods. In order for students to fully understand the course information, students should stay current with news, regularly attend class and complete all assignments including the assigned readings, and study systems required for each chapter.

Textbook Information:  the required text is: Foner,Eric. Give Me Liberty:AN American History. Volume One Seagull edition. Norton 2017.

Additional Course Information: A lists of terms for each chapter will be distributed at the first class meeting. Quiz on these terms will be given at the appropriate time as listed in the reading schedule which will be distributed the first day of class. 

Requirements:

Quiz- consult the reading schedule for dates, chapters and major subjects covered. These short tests are of the identification type taken from a distributed liftoff terms. They are essay and will be given at the end of class. NO MAKEUPS!!

Term Paper: You will have two choices and your choice will be due on 1/29/2019 at the beginning of class. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

1. A What If Paper: this paper will be five to eight pages in length, typed, double spaced, MLA format PLUS A WORKS CITED PAGE. DO NOT OCUNT THIS WORKS CITED PAGE AS PART OF YOUR REQUIRED NUMBER OF PAGES. The subject of the paper will be cleared wit me and no two people will write on the same topic. The general format will be two pages of historical background, followed by a change in history and speculation of how history would have been changed. You will use actual events or lack or these events to bolster your thesis. The last paragraph will be about what you have learned from this experience. PLEASE NOTE THAT WHWEN USING MATERIAL FOR YOUR RESEARCH THAT ENCYCLOPEDIAS, PRINT OR ONLINE, ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE SOURCES FOR COLLEGE PAPERS. THREE SOURCES MINIMUM , ALL SOURCES MUST BE PRINTED AND ATTACHED TO YOUR PAPER. IN ADDITION PARTS USED IN YOUR PAPER MUST BE HI-LITED. I WILL NOT READ ANY PAPER THAT DOES NOT HAVE THESE SOURCES ATTACHED AND HI-LITED. 

2. Compare/contrast paper using a historical film. See me for suggestions. NO TWO PEOPLE WILL WRITE ON THE SAME FILM. This paper will be five to eight pages in length, typed, double spaced,MLA format plus a works cited page. DO NOT COUNT THE WORKS CITED PAGE AS PART OF YOUR REQUIRED NUMBER OF PAGES. THREE SOURCES MINIMUM. PLEASE NOTE THAT ENCYCLOPEDIAS, PRINT OR ONLINE, ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE SOURCES FOR COLLEGE PAPERS. SOURCES USED IN YOUR PAPER MUST BE ATTACHED AND THE PARTS USED IN YOUR PAPER HI-LITED.  GENERAL FORMAT IS A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PARTS OF THE FILM THAT YOU ARE GOING TO ANALYZE ( DO NOT GIVE ME PLOT) , FOLLOWED BY YOUR ANALYSIS OF HOW FACTS WERE PORTRAYED ACCURATELY OR NOT. THE FINAL PARAGRAPH WILL BE ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM THIS ASSIGNMENT. THE PAPER IS DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ON 1/29/2019. NO LATE PAPERS ARE ACCEPTED. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR SOURCES ATTACHED AND HI-LITED I WILL NOT READ IT.

Map work coordinated with chapters are required. DUE DATS WILL BE DETERMINED IN CLASS.

GRADING SCALE: 100-90=A, 89-80=B,79-70=C, 69-60=D,59-0=F. D AND F ARE NOT PASSING IN COLLEGE. EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE AVIALABLE BUT YOU MAY NOT EARN AN A WITH EXTRA CREDIT, NOR MAY YOU MOVE MORE THAN ONE LETTER GRADE LEVEL. TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR EXTRA CREDIT ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. 

GRADES ARE WEIGHTED:

QUIZ 15%,MIDTERM 25%, FINAL 30%,PAPER 20%,MAPS AND MISC. ( CHAPTER SQ3R OR MAPPING) 5%, PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE 5%. 

Attendance policy: students are responsible for their own drops. the total number of absence allowed is two. Late arrivals and early departures will be 1/2 of an absence.STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: YOUR SUCCESS IN THIS COURSE IS IMPORTANT TO ME. PLAGARISIM OR CHEATING OR ACADEMIC DISHONESTY OF ANY SORT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. THE STUDENT WILL AUTOMATICALLY FAIL THE ASSIGNMENT FOR ANY ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT. APPROPRIATE ACTION MAY ALSO BE TAKEN BY THE SOCIAL SCIENC DIVISION. IN THE CASE OF COPYING BOTH STUDENTS WOULD RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THE ASSIGNMENT.


Student Learning Objectives:  1. Students will critically analyze and interpret qualitative and quantitative data in order to evaluate historic events. 2. Students will develop communication skills through oral and written exercises and develop analytical skills by critically interpreting historical topics. 3. Students will analyze how local, national and international policies and practices developed in the past continue to impact their contemporary lives.
