Course Description:
Expository and argumentative essays and the research paper.
Textbook Information:
Required readings will be provided in class or available online. You are responsible for making sure you download or get from class all required readings.
The recommended text for this class is the following:

Course Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of English 101, students will be able to:
- When reading
- Understand the text (i.e., identify main ideas) and “read between the lines” for implied meaning
- Start to identify the authors’ writing strategies (i.e., how they organize their argument and their perspectives in writing)
- Analyze the meaning of the text (e.g., How does what the author says fit in with what you think and with other things you’ve read?)
- When researching
- Choose the "right” information from written texts to use in your own writing
- Know what information to note down in order to be able to cite using MLA format
- Use the library website to find different types of sources
- Use sources without plagiarizing an author’s exact words
- When writing
- Use basic sentence structures correctly and effectively
- Summarize and paraphrase what authors have said
- Convey your own thoughts about what authors have said
- Write in academic format (i.e., formulating a good thesis statement and carrying forward your own argument in an essay)
