Course Description: 

This course is an introduction to computer applications for a medical office setting, including Practice Management with patient registration, scheduling, posting charges and payments, generating reports, computerized billing, and preparing insurance claim forms. The course also includes documenting components of clinical back office encounters, ordering procedures and referrals, and preparing lab requisitions and prescriptions in an Electronic Medical Record.

Course Learning Objectives: 

  • Demonstrate administrative and bookkeeping procedures using medical Practice Management application simulation exercises. 
  • Demonstrate clinical documentation of the components of patient encounters utilizing Electronic Medical Records and medical charting simulation exercises.  
  • Discuss Meaningful Use and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regarding electronic medical records. 

Student Learning Objectives: Thinking and Reasoning--Student will:

  • Accurately and professionally perform administrative and bookkeeping procedures in a Practice Management application
  • Accurately and professionally document the components and procedures for clinical back office encounters in an Electronic Medical Record application.

Course Requirements: 

The course exercises, tests and simulations are accessed through MOSS 3.0 in MindTap and consist of 100 training and companion assessment exercises, four online multiple-choice Unit Tests, three Unit Capstone Simulations, one Final Test, and one Final Capstone Assessment. The daily discussions and the two discussion assignments are also required and accessed through Discussions in Canvas.
