TEXT:  Adler, R. B., Rosenfeld, L. B. & Proctor, R. F. (2015). Interplay:  The Process of Interpersonal Communication. (13th Edition).  New York: Oxford University Press

Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to introduce important theories and practices used to explain and describe interpersonal communication.  We will examine concepts including the communication process, self-concept, perception, non-verbal communication, listening, intimacy & distance in relationships, and conflict resolution.

Student Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Students who successfully complete this course should be able to use theories of interpersonal communication to explain and evaluate their own behavior, as well as the behavior of others in interpersonal relationships.
  2. Students who successfully complete this course should be able to synthesize and apply appropriate and effective conflict management strategies.

Course Objectives: 

  1. To overview and examine interpersonal communication theories and concepts.
  2. Develop a better understanding of effective interpersonal communication skills and behaviors.
  3. To be able to effectively analyze specific communication episodes.
  4. To explore how such topics as self-concept, perception, and bias can effect interpersonal communication.
  5. Learn to use proper verbal and non-verbal communication.
