Course Description:
This course will focus on leadership and the types of leadership that relate to the work of the OTA. Topics will include leadership, advocacy, promotion, supervision, fieldwork, ethical considerations, and participation in professional organizations.
Textbook Information:
Dunbar, SB & Winston, K: An Occupational Perspective on Leadership, 2nd edition, Slack Inc., 2015
Course Learning Objectives:
- Compare and contrast various theories on leadership.
- Distinguish between the terms “management” and “leadership”.
- Investigate leadership opportunities for the OTA within professional organizations including the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, the American Occupational Therapy Association, Occupational Therapy Association of California, and the California Board of Occupational Therapy.
- Examine leadership opportunities for the OTA within clinical practice.
- Analyze the role of ethics and maintaining integrity.
- Analyze the skills required for advocacy and promotion and develop a plan to promote OT.
- Investigate the role of the OTA in quality management.
- Examine the role of the OTA in fieldwork supervision.
- Investigate the steps required for establishing an effective fieldwork placement.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Students will evaluate leadership opportunities within professional organizations, the community, and in OT practice settings.
- Students will apply leadership theory to OT practice settings.
- Students will develop leadership strategies that improve the fieldwork experience for both the student and the supervisor.
