Course Description

This course focuses on understanding and applying the fundamental principles of public speaking. The speech skills include identifying the purpose, selecting the topic, conducting research, organizing content and outlining the speech (Aristotelian Outline). Students will learn to present information clearly, reasonably, and persuasively by giving individual speeches.

 Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s)

  1. Students will plan, prepare and deliver speeches for various forms of public oratory.
  2. Students will identify and use key organizational patterns for selected methods of delivery.
  3. Students will write formal outlines, an audience analysis, and bibliography appropriate for various forms of public oratory.
  4. Students will construct logical arguments to support claim or proposition.

Academic Integrity

You alone are responsible for developing the content of your speeches, should you use outside sources, you must give credit to your source in your presentation.  Failure to do so is plagiarism, as is using anyone’s work without proper documentation.  Any incident of plagiarism will result in failure of the assignment.

Attendance

Attendance is an important part of this class. Roll will be taken within the first 10 minutes of the class. Attendance is also mandatory during speech days.  You will be deducted one letter grade from the grade you earned on that particular speech for every speech day you miss!

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Speeches

You will give several speeches throughout the class.  Each speech will build upon the previous and will be graded on the basis of successfully meeting the objectives of that speech.  Outlines are required and final drafts are turned in on the day you are schedule class on your scheduled speech day.

 

Speeches that run less than or over the allotted time will have points deducted from total. 

**PowerPoint/Visual aids/Youtube: You need to have this ready to go on a flash drive.

Note: If you work on a Mac, sometimes the PowerPoint information does not translate correctly to the PC’s in the classroom- DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WORK BEFORE YOU COME TO CLASS TO GIVE YOUR SPEECH!!!

 

“I am speech.” Time 2-4 minutes

  1. Image intro of yourself
  2. Short key word outline using index cards
  3. Work in pairs

“What we carried” Cultural Narrative Story (50pts) 3-4 minutes

  1. Short narrative of your culture.
  2. Handout will be provided.
  3. Typed Outline required (no reference page)

Informative Speech: (75pts) 6-8 minutes

  1. Select a topic to inform the class.
  2. Use audience analysis to select a topic that is relevant to the class population.
  3. 4 Academic sources (Wikipedia is not an academic source!)
  4. Aristotelian outline (typed)
  5. MLA or APA Reference page (typed)
  6. Power point required

Persuasive Speech (100pts) 7-8 minutes

  1. Employ persuasive strategies to evoke change in your audience members.
  2. 5 Academic sources
  3. MLA or APA reference page required.
  4. Persuasive Outline required
  5. Be creative, motivate/inspire your audience, and demonstrate you are passionate about what you are persuading us to do or believe.
  6. Power point optional

General Course Guidelines:

  1. You need to follow the outline format discussed in class.
  2. You can make up one of the two major speeches (Informative or Persuasive), without documentation on the last day of classes (make-up day). However, the highest grade you can earn is a C.
  3. Documented Emergencies:
  4. If you have a documented emergency and cannot complete an assignment on time, you must contact me prior to the beginning of class (email preferred).
  5. Classroom Decorum:
    1. Turn off cell phones when you enter the classroom.
    2. As an audience member, you have a job! Your job is to pay attention to your peers. Putting your head down on the table or writing/doodling when a fellow classmate is speaking does not honor your classmate. Please support and respect each other.
