Grading Standards Your grade will be based on the following criteria (Please go to Canvas grade book for detailed points of each assignment):
1) Attendance and Participation (10%) You can earn your participation grade by coming to the class prepared and ready to participate on a regular basis; and by consistently interacting in Chinese with your instructor and classmates. If you do not need to attend this class to pass the exams, you belong in a more advanced Chinese class. There is no excused absence. Each missed class will reduce your participation grade by 10%. Students who arrive late or leave while class is in session without prior notification to instructor will be marked absent. Students will need to notify the instructor ahead of the class and submit homework. The instructor may drop students with 4 absences (25% of the semester course).
2) Worksheet Assignments (30%) Worksheets will be assigned each class session. Students can download the worksheets from Canvas. If a student misses a class, he or she should email the assignment to the instructor before the due date. Students should retain all assignments until you receive your final grade in the course. Any assignments turned in late will receive either partial grade or no grade.
3) Online Quizzes and unit tests(30%) An online quiz will be given for every lesson. There will be 10 quizzes. Check out the quiz open and close dates. The quizzes are allowed to retake once. No make-ups are allowed. There are three unit tests throughout the semester. Please go to gradebook for points details.
4) Mid-term Exam, Final exam, and Final Skit (25%)
5) DLA (5%): Directed Learning Activities (DLAs) provide supplemental instruction to an instructor's course. You are required to complete two DLAs (DLA#1, DLA#2, and DLA#3) at the Learning Center. When students check-in, they will receive a DLA packet. Those DLAs will provide specific instructions.
Extra Credit:
Culture Presentation (5%) You will present a 5-minute presentation that explains one particular topic pertinent to Chinese culture. You are required to do some book or online research, as well as interviews to get your information correct, complete, and comprehensible. Your culture project should be illustrated with PowerPoint slides and may be presented in English.

Class Policy
1) Electronics in the Classroom--Turn off your electronic devices! It is very disruptive if phones or hand-held devices go off in class, so please show respect to your classmates and instructor and turn them off before coming in to class. No computers, please!
2) Drop Policy--It’s YOUR responsibility! Instructor may drop you for excessive absences, but ultimately it is YOUR responsibility to drop the class. Do not assume that the instructor will drop you. It is your responsibility.
3) Class Conduct--Participate in class, and always respect others. Students are responsible for regulating their own conduct and for respecting the rights and privileges of others. Failure to show respect for the standards is cause for dismissal from class and even expulsion.
4) Show up on time! Please make a point of being ready to go when class starts so we do not lose any time.
