Instructor Name - James "Marty" Rudd

Course Description:  

Engine performance procedures including fuel, ignition, oscilloscope, emission control, and computer systems. Hands-on testing and diagnosis is emphasized. Students must furnish approved safety glasses. This course assists the student in preparation for the A8 (Engine Performance) ASE certification exam.  Suggested preparation: Automotive Technology 002 or 006.

Automotive Technology Fifth Edition, Author; James Halderman. 

                                    Cost, Approx $175.00

Additional Course Information: 

This class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00pm until 10:30pm. Class is divided into lecture and lab assignments. Class hours include two hours of lab assignments/exercises and two hours of lecture. Lecture is two hours combined. Subject introduction at the beginning of class and lab assignment findings debrief at the end of class. Students are expected to arrive on time and stay till class is over and shop clean up is finished.

 


Course Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course a student will be able to:

  • Discuss key safety issues in engine performance repair.
  • Explain the operation of engines commonly used in modern vehicles.
  • Analyze ignition system failures using service information and test equipment.
  • Demonstrate the procedures for the use of a lab scope in engine performance diagnosis.
  • Identify typical automotive style waveforms found in engine control sensors.
  • Explain the primary causes of high exhaust emissions.
  • Identify computer sensors found on most modern automotive vehicles.
  • Solve engine performance concerns using service information, scan tool data, and engine codes.

Demonstrate the ability to correctly complete engine performance tasks as specified by ASE/NATEF
