Section 59491 combines online instruction with 4 mandatory on-campus meeting dates on Thursday 6/21, 6/28, 7/5, 7/12, from 8:30am-12:20pm, SAC D-206. Students are required to log on to Canvas on the first day of classes: http://rsccd.instructure.com. Email instructor first week of class.

Prerequisites: Prerequisite: English 061 or English for Multilingual Students 112 or Adult Basic Education 116 with a minimum grade of C or qualifying profile from English placement process.

We will communicate in this course by discussion board posts and email. To ensure that you will receive notifications from me, register current email address in “Notifications” on Canvas.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Expository and argumentative essays and the research paper. Special interest sections described in schedule of classes. Students may be referred to the Learning Center.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will use the writing process to write, in MLA format, academic essays, including a documented research paper, using appropriately chosen details, organizational strategies, more complex sentence variety, and sufficiently correct grammar, punctuation, effective word choice, and style.

Students will be able to read critically for literal and implied meaning, identify main ideas, organizational strategies and authors' writing strategies as well as summarize, paraphrase, and analyze written works.

Students will evaluate and ethically use primary and secondary academic sources to avoid plagiarism and will use the library's resources, including online databases.

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION

In accordance with the college drop policy, students who do not access the class web site or submit the “first assignments” by the due date may be dropped as a no show. Students who fail to turn in the weekly assignments and or participate in the discussion boards will be considered “absent” and may be dropped from the class for “excessive absence.” Students are responsible to officially drop the class or they will receive a letter grade based on their performance.

No Show Drop: In this course, you must complete all of the following activities by the due dates in the first week of classes or you will be dropped as a “No Show”:

1. Complete the Discussion assignments.

2. Complete the readings and related assignments.

Excessive Absence Drop: If one week of non-participation is observed by the instructor the student will be dropped.
