Course Description:
BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training represents one (1) of four (4) options for a Repair Technician candidate to qualify for the initial state licensing examination. This course is intended for candidates with at least two years (2) of engine performance repair experience whom may complete this training to qualify for the licensing examination. This course is intended to provide students a fundamental understanding of the diagnosis and repair of Smog Check failures. There will be focused electrical/electronic management systems and engine/emission control performance lecture coverage. If successfully completed, the BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training is valid for five years from the date of completion.
We'll cover the following:
General electrical theory and principles: test lights, jumper wires, and logic probes; digital voltmeters, ammeters, and ohmmeters; electrical circuit and component diagnosis; wiring diagrams, color coding, and numbering; open, shorts, and grounds; and intermittent and continuous electrical faults.
Engine mechanical systems: four-stroke theory; camshaft and valve timing theory; Compression testing; cylinder leak-down testing; and diagnostic procedures to determine the cause of compression losses. Engine fuel systems: fuel delivery system including fuel pump and fuel pressure regulators; theory and operation of fuel injectors; fuel injector diagnostic procedures; and test procedures for fuel delivery systems and fuel injectors.
Engine ignition systems: Ignition theory; ignition timing controls; and impact of ignition timing on vehicle emissions.
Electronic controlled engine systems: Theory of computer input devices; theory of computer output devices; theory of computer operation; diagnostic procedures for locating computer communication faults; emission control systems; computer control systems; diagnostic systems and trouble codes; On-Board Diagnostics II (OBDII) and Mode 6 operation; Enhanced fuel evaporative systems; and scan tool operation and usage.
