Course Description: This course introduces the student to the various types of alternative fuels used in modern vehicles. Safety and operation are highlighted. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) training is emphasized. LPG, LNG, Bio-diesel, Ethanol, and Hydrogen are also covered. This course prepares automotive as well as diesel students for industry. (same as Diesel 287). 3.0 units, 54 hours lecture, transferable to CSU.

  • Identify key safety issues on each of the main alternative fuels.
  • Compare the various common types of alternative fuels.
  • Describe the differences in engine design when using alternative fuels.
  • List the primary components found on light duty CNG fuel systems.
  • Discuss the benefits of using alternative fuels in modern vehicles.
  • Explain the specific safety issues of CNG and LNG heavy duty vehicles.
  • Identify primary CNG components on various applications.
